Why does online banking only work on business days?

I paid my credit card bill from my bank account (both Bank of America) on the 27th, a Saturday, because the due date was the 28th, a Sunday. Of course it didn't go through until Monday, and I got charged with a $39 late fee. I didn't realize it worked like that because I usually pay a few days early.
I don't understand this-- If the bill can't be paid on Saturday or Sunday when it is due, with a simple transfer from the same company, why don't they just say that the due date is the Friday before? As far as I know there would have been no possible way to pay the bill on either the 27th or the 28th.

I think this is an issue with your bank, not electronic banking in general. BAC is infamous for gouging fees of all sorts from clients.

Threaten closing account in person = fees refunded.
