OK, i have this:

Sony vaio RS420 (a desktop)
512mb ram 2700
120gb HD (partitioned into two parts)
radeon 9200 (soon to be 6600gt)
um...yeah

For some reason, i've done EVERYTHING but for some reason, when i am on the desktop, and i right click to open the menu (with display properties on it) it takes at least 4-15 seconds to load....but the rest of my computer runs really fast....

whats up with that???

Control Panel > System > Advanced > Settings under Performance

There you can untick everything. Leave the bottom one if you want to use XP's theme or any other theme besides Windows Classic. The one above that you can tick so there is no a box around icons on your desktop. So if you have a wallpaper keep this checked too.

You could also right click on the desktop > properties and go to the appearance tab and choose affects. Unchck anything not wanted. I only have Cleartype checked.

You say you have S&D, but do you run it? Have you updated its files so it knows of more recent threats? Have you installed new video drivers lately? You may want to uninstall the ones you have and run Driver Cleaner in Safe Mode to remove them completely, then reinstall them over again.

Display Properties are usualy paged and are not readaly avalable from RAM so when you click on it, the hdd needs to load it first. ADDING MORE RAM 2gb or more will alow you to edit BOOT.INI and you can change a line there that says: /fastdetect to /nolowmem I have done this and noticed that menus popup instantly but with only 512mb of ram it will slow down you programs or games.

There still could be some malware on your PC that was not detected by Spybot S&D. It by itself does not do much. You could post a Hijackthis log for me or someone else to look at, but if it was some sort of malware I would think it woul affect your whole system and not just when you right click the desktop.

When you right click the desktop though is there alot of context menus?

ALSO go into the registry and edit THIS:

Hkey_Current_user\ControlPanel\desktop
find the Registry string that says
MenuShowDelay and change the number value to 0

0 is way too fast. It is for me at least. Try setting it to 200 or something.

I know what they are, but when set at 0 and you are navigating through the start menu it gets annoying to me if I accidentally hover over another menu it will instantly show it. I find 200 to work perfect for me.

I have some Questions for you:
Q) How many processes are running when you start the computer?
Q) How many services are running when you check Services.MSC?
Q) Why do you need to change the video properties so much that 5 seconds of HDD (hard disk drive) Delay bother you?

The first two have a great effect on system performance.

If the answer to your third question is something like I play games and want to change the settings for each game, then download RadLinker. RadLinker creates Custom Settings Profiles for each game and change AA, Resoultion, Anisotopic Filtering, Refresh, etc automaticly when a game is launched. A differant Profile can be created for each game.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4156.html

Part of the reason why you computer is slower now is over time the more you Install and Uninstall on it the slower it becomes. When you click on Display Properties windows loads the proper menu from the HDD, the more "JUNK" on a HDD the slower it will be to respond. Try defragmenting with program like Diskeeper a 30 day trial can be found at:

Actually not really. Just because it says a service is running in services.msc does not mean it is using up any CPU cycles or memery at all. The only time it would would be at startup, but if the service is not used at all during your session it will not affect performance.

I trimmed my system down from 25 services to 8 and cut some of the crud out of my windows boot and every thing runs faster including my games. And Yes if it is running it is taking up CPU/Memory reasources. IF you dont believe me, just try enableing them all and add the rest from your windows cd that are not loaded by default. I promise you your system will come to a crawl.

http://www.blackviper.com/ is a great reasource for Windows services Knowledge.

Ad-Aware < Download the free version of ad-aware

Install program and run the updates on it.

Start to scan > select CUSTOM SETTINGS > and continue scan

Try to run teh scan in Safe Mode, it will run faster.

Remove anything it finds.

I love Ad-aware......... fantastic program!

http://www.blackviper.com/ is a great reasource for Windows services Knowledge.

Services are processes that run in the background and wait for system calls to act. NOt all of them will use CPU or memory recources. Most services will just load .dlls that wait in system memory and some don't use up any RAM and will remain on disk and be paged into memory if needed. This may sound bad, but these .dlls are only a few kilobytes in size. Also each process only uses the CPU when it is supposed to use it. Just because it says it is running in services.msc does not mean it is using up any CPU cycles or memory

So the fact of the matter is a service will not use any system recources unless the service is directly in use.

Also that blackviper site you posted is crap. It has alot of false information and bad advice. Also his idea behind disabling services is that it will iuncrease performance by not taking up as much system recources.

I myself do disable some services, but this is not for performance reasons . They are just annoyances such as Security Center.

Many sites also want you to believe that running some services are a security risk. This is complete BS. Someone would of have already hacked in to your PC to use a service as a means of attack.

Also the performance increase you saw was most likely the placebo effect. Another thing is that I have fixed a few PC's where the user was following blackvipers stupid advice by disabling services and then lost funcionality of something. This is because blackvipers site fails to mention quite a few things about many services.
