Why does my TV recordings look like crap?

I am using an ATI AIW radeon 8500DV to record TV shows. I am using a custom setting made from the DVD high setting, then increasing the bit rate to the max. The actual TV looks fine while I watch, but when i record some and then try to watch it, it is totally unwatchable. I have the latest set of drivers, what else can i do.

Also i have another question. I have heard it is possible to hook up a a PS2 so that you can play it on the computer monitor, how exactly do you do this?

Are you dropping frames during capture? Capturing at that rate takes a fairly powerful computer.

It starts out dropping a few frames but within 10 seconds or so it is dropping less then 1% of the frames. I will try recording at a lower setting. I wish I could better explin what it looks like. The closest explination I can give is trying to watch TV on a station that is scrambled.

I think my recording probelm is fixed. It must have been something to do with the way i setup my custom record setting. I dropped down to DVD quality and it works fine. I will have to play with it a little though, cause I want a little higher quality video

Some of the settings for the video use the onboard encoding hardware (on the card) while some other settings just use the processor. I am really not all that familiar with it, but have played with my aiw7500 a little.

Try Using Descalar, it's a great TV program and the video quality is great...Files

AIW cards use software compression, they are not hardware encoders at all.

The Rage Theater already uses "adaptive deinterlacing" making use of Dscaler somewhat redundant on AIW cards, video quality should already be great.

Thats the key. Video capture is demanding on your computer, to get the best quality, you have to tweak with the settings according to the capabilities of your computer. For comparison, I can cap the "DVD High" preset without dropping frames with my rig. You don't list your system specs, so its just speculation as to how your rig "shouldd" be performing.

Take the "multi-tap adaptor" from the PS2 and hook it into the "purple dongle" (my AW Radeon has the composite video and audio connectors on the dongle, the 8500dv should be similar) then pick the composite connector in the TV application (2nd button from the right). That should do it.
