Why does my sound snap crackle and pop?

i'm using a turtle beach santa cruz, asus a7v133a, win98se

whenever i playback any sound file, i get this annoying static/hissing/snap/crackle/pop sound.

this has happened on BOTH my turtle beach santa cruz as well as a guillemont fortissmo card

it doesn't happen when i play cd's however

any ideas? anybody? this is gettin really annoying =(

Maybe your speaker wires? Clean the connectors and see if it gets better.

speakers- not that because when i connect them to my cd player it works fine ^_^

drivers- yup latest drivers from santa cruz ^_^

anybody have any ideas? =*(

I have the same problem in Win2k with a SBLive Mp3 5.1 and a Siig. CDs are great but everything else crackles like popcorn
