why does my PC keep shuting down

for some reaon when I leave my PC on overnight when I wake up in the morning it is shut off, is there a setting that I need to adjust in my OS or something I have Vista Ultimate 64

any suggestions guys
 
Or check your Event Logs and see if there was any BSOD. When you powered it back up, was it resuming session or was a it a brand new session?

another question when defragmenting the hard drive in Vista, it doesnt show a status or percentage bar like it did in XP, it just says ( it will take a few minutes to a few hours ) is this how the Vista defrager work, with no status bar or indication of how far along the degramenting process is
 
You have just experienced the S3 sleep state. It was designed to save you money (both in power costs and hardware lifetime). Your computer was not shut off, it was still drawing several watts of power. Just wake it up: hitting the power button should be sufficient, and you'll notice a lack of a BIOS screen, loading screen, etc...your system will simply show you the desktop again.

Yes. The defragger was redesigned for Vista, and not just the user interface, or lack thereof, either. For example, it now runs automatically, negating any need to run it manually. Also, it now ignores files smaller than 64 megs. More info.
