I have a very strange situation here ... my modem would disc. constantly every 2-3 minutes. I have several computers at my disposal and it is disconnecting those computer in 2-3 minutes.

It couldn t have been the ISP since I can connect fine with my other computer [one and only computer]

Could it be hardware related ? Could it be my modem settings ? I have been struggling with this for days now, to no avail..

Any inputs appreciated

Have you checked the phone line noise of the computer that keeps disconnecting? Could be that your cable crosses some heavy duty power line somewhere and that is what's kicking you off.

purplehayes,

I am positive that the phone line is fine as I can connect my "one" computer fine with the same line ...

Now it brings me to this question .. the "one" computer that is fine is a French computer with French modem. The other computers that I've tested is American Computer with American modem. I am in France now for a network project.

Could it be that French telekom system don't like american modems ? Anyone with this experience ?

Thanks again for the response

That is very possible. A good way to check that wouyld be to swap modems . . . use the French modem on the American computer and vice-versa and see if the American modem still gets disconnected. That usually happenes when the signals can no longer be read or sustained. Many European telcom circuits carry billing code data that US modems cannot deal with right out of the box with no filters or changes.

It maybe the power. I lived in Germany for three year and Europe's power is different then here in US. Meaning in Germany their power ran at 220 volts at 50Hz and US runs at 110-120 at 60Hz. So what I'm saying is that you maybe running at 50Hz and your modem need 60Hz. Sometimes electronics can be finicky. I know this isn't a good explanation, but I'm real tiered with little sleep and time.

I also agree with corky-g this also could be a problem.

Hey, I have been doing internet technical support for over 100 different ISP's for a couple of years.. I have seen this way too many times.

Disconnections are caused almost 99% by the phone line or the modem. If it is a phone line issue, answer these questions to find out:

1) Is your phone cord long? (over 6 feet)
2) Do you have call waiting on your phone line?
3) Do you have any splitters on the phone line?
4) Does your phone line go through a phone line surge protector?
5) Does your phone line go through a fax machine?
6) Do you ever hear echo's or static on your phone line while talking?
7) How old are the lines in the place you live?
8) Do you have a cordless phone with a dead or low battery hooked up to the phone line?, if so, disconnect it from the phone line.
9) Has there been any electrical storms in your area lately?

And.. if it is a modem issue:

1) How old is the modem?
2) Set the maximum speed to the modem to 57600
3) Set the flow control of the modem to software
4) Try lowering the fifo buffers
5) Is it v.90, if so, try using an init string to disable v.90
6) Get the exact model of your modem and search for some init strings for it
7) How long has it been since the drivers have been updated, your second computer could be working fine because it may be more compatible with the modems that the ISP are using, drivers could solve this issue.
8) Is the modem a Windows Modem?, if you have a winmodem on a slower computer, it can cause disconnections.

What ISP are you with.. I may work for them =)

Hope this helps,

Jayme
