Why does my modem do this? "Cannot open port"

I have an ISA Diamond SupraExpress 56i that's been through several different motherboards. It's always been the same problem, at random bootups, I get the message "can't open port" when I try to connect to the internet. Until recently, I thought the problem was with my particular modem. But now that I have a second identical modem, it's having the same problem.

It sounds like either your modem is trying to connect to the internet automatically on boot or that some program (that uses the net and you keep on all the time) is trying to get the modem to connect to an external server. It's better, in my opinion, to connect manually, so I'd recommend disabling whatever automatic functions are jabbing your modem with pointed sticks so that it shifts and snarls.

I agree with tristramshandy, your modem is trying to connect as you boot into windows!
There must be a way to turn that "feature" off, if you cant find it call diamondmm or check their website.

I had this EXACT same problem with my US Robotics 56K modem. It turns out I had too much installed and the registry became corrupted. Try backing up your important documents and formatting, as a last resort if the suggestions given by others don't work.

The only two program I have are at startup are Explorer and Systray. Can it be something from system.ini or win.ini? I hate to reinstall everything. I'm using Windows98 btw.
