brand new? was it sealed?

I wouldnt trust "brand new" unless it was sealed (at least).

and save any important files just in case.

any idea what brand the drive is?

the drive is a fujitsu if i recall, 5400RPM 40Gig

not brand new- it was a dell refurb part but manufactured early this year. it was sealed.

EDIT: IT IS A HITACHI TRAVELSTAR

Uh, didn't Fujitsu issue some massive recall?

Either way, call Dell, tell them the brand new drive is clicking, they send you new drive.

Isn't Fujitsu either a partner/manufacturer of drives for IBM...?

My 40 gig Deathstar clicked for about six months before it simply crapped out one day. It was running nearly 24/7, with data going on and off from a server I was running...heads up, though.

it's gonna self destruct. i'd save stuff and throw it back at the maker like a grenade.

Ionno. Mine was doing that and after it died I noticed the cable was a bit worn (insulation was worn to bare wire on a couple conductors). Replaced that and the new drive seems to click a lot less. I also stopped using the ATA-66 controller on my mobo (bought a PCI ATA-133 card). Not sure what was the real cause.

I've got a 20 gig fujitsu right next to me clicking like crazy. It stops working for weeks at a time. I'd love to get some money back, but I'm out of luck living outside the US.
