Why does my hard drive run for 20 minutes after boot?

I swear it drives me crazy. I have Defender and nTune loading at boot, that's it. The drive runs for 20-30 minutes constantly after Vista 64 bit loads.

Probably Vista indexing your files.

Mine does it too, I hate it. I think it has to do with Vista indexing.

Could also be Superfetch. My one does that. I either keep my comp on all the time or hybernate it so it usually doesn't happen.
It makes little sence to shut it down (unless it needs to) when hybernate works well, and does the same thing (the comp is completely off).

It's probably not indexing.

Everyone says indexing, but it's been well over 1 month since I installed Vista Premium on my machine.

I don't remember the exact process name, but I did find out it was not indexing on my machine.

It could be windows defender as well. My hdd gets quite a bit activity after booting but it's usually over within 5 minutes max. I have indexer and defender disabled.

What everyone else said. When I notice some churning it's usually defender scannings things in the background or indexing stuff I've moved or changed. No big deal.
