why does my computer keep randomly restarting itself?

Apparently everyone else has seen a lot more systems reboot because of software problems than I have.

Are you seeing even a glimpse of a blue screen right when it's going down for reboot?

Turning off auto restart is a good idea, though, for everyone!
 
check your system log. Open Control Panel -> open Administrative tools -> Open Even Viewer -> Click on System and Application start checking on error logs.
 
Your computer could be blue screening.

Properties on My Computer->Advanced->Startup and Recovery Settings->Uncheck Automatically restart

This might help you diagnose your problem better.
 
It can also be the risers under the motherboard. If anything is touching the motherboard from the bottom that isn't screwed in remove it. Your mobo can eventually short.

I'm not sure if you're being serious.

I'd suggest the dishwasher.


In regards to the fan causing restarts; it might be that a dying (or mucked up) CPU or video card or power supply or case fan is allowing your CPU or video card or power supply or case to overheat. The onset of the restarts over time might be dust building up over time, right?

Assuming you're having a heat problem:
Have you opened the box up? Found the loud fan? Is it full of dust in there? If it's an Antec case, does it have that filter in the front grill of the case? Have you tried cleaning that?

It's a little odd that you know you've got a Gigabyte motherboard and an Antec case, but you don't know what PSU stands for. 😀

If you actually consider doing that, be sure to 1. Disconnect the power cables and all devices that provide power to the computer. 2. Push the power button on the computer many many times and then holding it for about 30 seconds (will drain power from PSU and mobo). 3. Pour the distilled water and ONLY distilled water on the board. 4. Let it dry for about a week (safer is better than sorry) 5. Check to make sure that there is no fricken water anyways (consider shaking the board before lettting it dry for a week) 6. Presto?

You have to use distilled water because regular water has minerals/metals in it that can cause a short circuit hence the reason why water "conducts" electricity. Right guys?

I really don't think you need to wash the board, at most just use compressed air/a compressor (machine). Just do the steps I outlined earlier and give us feedback on what you found out.
