Why does my cat act the way he does?

My cat (11 year old male tabby) can be sleeping in another room and have been totally silent for hours, and the second he hears me move (come upstairs, downstairs, open the fridge, etc), he will come to me and just start to howl (it's been like this for like 10 of his 11 years so far)

I'm not talking cute little meows. I'm talking about the type of howl that makes you feel like you want to pick him up and throw him outside. Problem is, the second you pick him up, he just shuts up, purrs like a race car and rubs his face against yours affectionately.

Within a minute or so, he gets tired of me and squirms until he get's himself free. The second I'm no longer holding him, he starts howling again.

It is so frustrating, so I just walk away, and he goes quiet.

Repeat every time you make a noise.

He gets so much attention from the people in the house, he's always got food and water, a clean litter box, etc.

My cat is an attention whore.

what do you do when your computer makes annoying noises? you smash it with your fists. i suggest a similar course of action!

it sounds like separation anxiety. my roommate's dog would howl for hours on end if she was separated from my roommate

Cats are cats.
You could tell me your cat dresses up like Marilyn Monroe every third Wednesday of the month and dances for money on the corner while firing a rifle at cars that drive by and it would not surprise me. Cats are just different.

I had a cat who did that. Well, not exactly, OF COURSE! He used a longbow, not a rifle.

What exactly is a bannable offense and why? It seems like anytime something is repeated more than 3 times theses days, you can get banned for it. What's the count up to for unwritten banable offenses now?

The cat has YOU trained. Knows it likes to be pet and being rubbed and if it howls (learned if it howled) you will pick it up and give it its drug fix (rubs).

Wife's cat does the same thing. Follows my wife all over the house meowing constantly till she picks her up, she will pet it for a few minutes, it will wiggle to get free, hit the floor turn around and start the sh1t all over again. Will NOT do this with me, and doesnt do this when she is at work because she tried when it was a kitten and yes I smacked it and told it to shut up. It gets pets on my terms not its. Im the damn master its the damn pet. The dogs are the same way with her. Jump all over her, and bark at her wanting what ever because they know she will give it up. With me, no jumping on me or barking at me. She hates this and keeps complaining to me on why they dont do it to me, I tell her why but she doesnt want to listen that she is their pet and not the other way around. They meow, bark, jump and she responds by dropping what she is doing and giving them pets, what food is in her hand, what have you. They tried with me and got a smack on the ass and a firm no and didnt take long for them to understand the sh!t dont float with me.

They get from me when I feel like giving it up. I wouldnt be able to handle the crap you (op) go through, or my wife goes through, every day from what supposed to be a pet. Its more like a clingy child that wont give up asking for your attention and sh!t 24/7. Unfortunately its trained you pretty good for 11 years and you wont be able to break it of that habbit. My suggestion to you once it dies and you get another one is to right off the start establish who the pet (master) is and when they meow or bark expecting you to do something, or give them something, you look at it and go "What the fvck you just do, OH I dont think so damit."

Believe it or not they will still respect you, your the one feeding them, and sorry to say they are not human and a real child. They are there for your enjoyment. Not the other way around ;)
