Why does my Auztentech X-Fi Prelude sound like crap?

I have an older Harmon/Kardon AVR 35 receiver hooked up to a 5.1 JBL SRS. From my computer, I'm using the optical cable provided to interface the receiver. I had to enable the DDL encoding on the Prelude before anything was audible. I was having the hardest time getting the Coaxial and Optical interfaces on the Prelude to transmit signal and the DDL encoding seemed to make things work.

There are only two options I can see to interface the receiver and 5.1 JBL SRS and that's through the coaxial or optical out lines. As it is, the Prelude Cpanel is stuck in a 2.1 speaker configuration despite the 5.1 setup. Have I overlooked something? The audio quality as it is currently setup is awful!

Thank you!!!

I sent mine back..I know a lot of people on these forums who love it. I think I just got a bad one.
No mater what I did, it just sounded bad. I been playing with stereo equipment for a long time and asked lots of questions to people and nothing helped.

What were your system specs, speaker setup and interface, along with your type of use (music, gamer, home theater) ?

At the time. I was using Klipsch Ultras..Music.. anything but rap.
I tried them thru a Dac.. VDA-1 into Headphone amps.
Tried with Solid State amps > NAD > Tannoy Refs speakers
Tried with Tube amps..Dared VP 16

Even took them to my cousin who has Harmon k. surround system

Everybody else seems to have good luck with them.

Somebody was selling a Clario 7.1 at FS forums, might try that

So from what I've read, using the SPDIF bypasses the internal DAC and filters which is in essence what your paying for when you buy a sound card.

So my question then is... Is there a way to interface my receiver with the sound-card via the analog jacks? I would need to interface the Prelude's "Front Out", "Rear Out" and "Center/Woofer Out" jacks with the Left and Right Coaxial jacks on the receiver... Is this even possible?

Over at hardforums there seems to be alot of people who use your card..Maybe hang out there..get some info

I know what you are going thru..I just punted

Was googleing your amp and found this..don't know if this applies

Our only criticism of the AVR35 is that it's incapable of interpreting DTS signals. As DTS encoding becomes more widespread, users may find that they're unable to hear many sound sources as they were originally intended. Of course, you can always use the receiver's Pro Logic mode as an alternative to digital surround.

My setup sounds BEAUTIFUL now thanks to the good people over at avsforum.com

It's all in the settings and wiring.
