why does my 90nm A64 run at 57 under prime?

i've been building for a long time and i tried plugging the zalman 7000cu into the mobo, as the highest speed it doesn't sound nearly as loud as the one in my other system that is running at full speed (but its also using a moltex to 2 in converter so i'm essentially running it off the pus)

should i switch the hsf to the moltex/psu plug to get more juice to the fan?

cpu under prime is 57C and at idle is 42-45

oh yeah this is a non-oced 3500+ 90nm that i just got from newegg. cbbbid

Seems a bit high, but the swing from idle to load is not bad...I get like a 19c swing and I would expect yours to be bettter then mine as it is....It maty be a fan speed thing...Habe you tried like speedfan or some app to tell you the rpm???

Maybe the thermal compound needs some time to settle in. Mine runs about 55C max in Prime running at 2475 MHz with the retail heatsink/fan.

I have never seen thermal compund "settle" ever result more then 2-3c lower...usually only 1-2c for me.....

Same cooler here... 55C max under prime full load (several hours max heat test/ system fully heated up) with the setup below (2500MHz, 1.6V)
So I consider your temps a bit high...but there are lots of other factors like: Do you use AS5? What is your ambient Temp? What case/additional cooling?

I haven't either until I got this Winchester... initially I was seeing load temps in Prime 95 around 60 degrees C at 2420 MHz.

zalman 7000Cu 92mm fan, running at highest speed (guru says 2460rpms) that was with the reheostat that came with it was set to max rpms, is it possible that the rheostat is simply not working?

ambient 73F

cpu 1.4V vdimm 2.8V all other voltages at default

the air coming out of the case is not hot at all (i'm using a 120mm fan), as a matter of fact it feel about the same as the air in the room

this morning when i woke up i look at the temp, (it was running prime all night), it sayed 59C (thats was running torture test that for max heat output)

idle is still 42C, and the drop is almost immediate, you stop prime and it dropped rigth down to 45 then in another minute it was idling at 42-43C

i just find it odd because my other A64 (2ghz 1M L2) idles at 42-43, and maxes under prime at 52 with the exact same HSF (though a few months older)

Is this 90nm sckt 939 winchester??/ the 1m L2 one in theory should be hotter versus a 512kb, but the 1mb one is a clawhammer likely and they have used SS/SOI.....That one is not a 90nm one...

The winchester in theory should run cooler...they are running .1v less vcore....

You want to see max output...run S&M 1.5.1...that wll add a few C's to that 59....Hottest temp app I have ever seen...

dannybin,

Max spec fan speed for the Zalman 7000 is 2600 rpms.
Mine at max normally runs in the 2480 to 2550 rpm range although I powered mine from the MB CPU Fan header.

When running at 1.4 V my temps idle in the 36 to 38 deg C range with an 8 to 10 deg C increase at full load (Prime - In place large FFTs). I have 2 front intake, 2 rear output and one side intake plus dual fan PSU. My case almost never goes more than 1-2 deg above ambient.

12 to 17 deg C increase under load may be high for a non OC'ed winchester CPU.

What does your case temp do?
Describe case and case fan configuration.
What Motherboard?
Did you confirm Vcore is around 1.4v from hardware monitor?

I know this doesn't answer your question but it may help with your concern of higher temps. Use the Zalman without the fan mate it should increase your fan speed about 100-150rpms and might help your temps a bit.
