Why does Mulder make an X on his window?

I'm only on season 3 so far so maybe they explain it later but why does Mulder always put the X on his window? It's driving me crazy.

Ooooooh! Yeah, now I remember him mentioning a "Mr. X" once... It took adding the 'Mr.' to it before I recognized it.

I'm pretty sure it was to call for Deepthroat in seasons 1 and 2, and X until whenever he died. End of season 4 I think.
