I go to download something and it tells me it is 2.41 Megs which will take 12 minutes at 28.8 kbps.

Who the hell has a 28.8K modem these days? I could understand them giving average 56K download times as many people still have these, but Christ my first PC came with a 33.6K modem over 5 years ago.

oh.

Well, you should be able to figure out how long it will take you...56k? Twice as fast. Cable/DSL? Does it matter? :p

There are people that still use 28.8, although not many. And it seems that they must cater to the lowest common denominator.

Then why not 14.4?

it's sorta like when DSL companies advertise, upto 50 times faster than 28.8kbps.. sounds much faster upto 25 times faster than 56kbps

Also try to remember how often a 56k user gets anything above 48k. 28.8 is a nice place to start.
