it's not always about how fast you shift.
it's what gear YOU want to be in and when YOU want to shift.
it's about you have total control of the car.
The computer selects the optimal gear for YOU. If you want to drop a gear, you drop the pedal hard. Give an example of when you want to be in a different gear than the computer would select for you? It automatically drops to a lower gear when it detects that your accelerating hard, and it automatically advances gears when you're taking it easy on the pedal, thus the whole idea behind an automatic transmission

this goes right out the window when you actually want to drive fast. when you round a corner in an automatic, you're always in the "coasting" gear for that speed. so you hit the throttle and then you have to sit around and wait for the transmission to figure out you want to accelerate and change the gear, and then you have to deal with the sudden burst of power. with a manual, you can be in the right gear ahead of time because unlike the computer, you know what you're going to do before you do it. autos are great when all you want to do speed up at a constant rate, then stop, then do it again. but they suck outside of those times.
