why does mercedes put autos in all their AMG's?

Yeah it's got that left/right gear shift thingy when you are in drive. Pretty useless though.

Dad bought some Mercedes that he takes to the track every couple of weeks. He never uses the manual mode, just leaves it in automatic. He's a pony car guy at heart, and loves manuals, but he really likes how the car shifts, corners and all, in the automatic mode.

Not sure if it's been said already, but the new SLK roadsters (including the AMG version) are supposed to have maual six-speed transmissions available.

Looks like Mercedes is finally starting to come over. They still have lackluster steering and brake feel compared to other performance-oriented sedans, but damn if they don't have some serious power.

It could just be the fact that AMG's are nothing more than play toys for rich execs that need a car to run around in on the weekends. They are freeway cruisers that provide gut wrenching power that simply doesn't need a manual transmission to be fast.

If the people that are dumping the money on an AMG want a manual transmission to flog, they'll buy a Porche to fill an open garage stall.

Time. Slips.

I have/had a lot of respect for you and appreciate your usually informative posts.... But imo you dug yourself into a hole that will difficult/impossible to climb out of.

With Mercedes' Automatic transmission I believe they have a special type of torque converter that fully locks (I think I'm not too familiar with this) that makes it shift quicker and lets you have full control over the gear. Before downshifting in an automatic (By selecting the gear) was a huge no-no. But with this type of torque converter, you can downshift and hold the gear and it won't freewheel is so you have engine braking and not break the transmission.

bmacd - seems like you did spit that number out of your @$$ - else post time slips.

i haven't been to the drag strip for a few years with my explorer. I only take my bikes now. Even if i WERE able to come across the slip from the strip, you guys would all cry "photoshop", so i'd be wasting my time anyways. I have nothing to prove to the 14 year old babies here, but if you're in the Detroit area, feel free to take my Explorer to the strip, for i lost my driver's license and am not able to drive until Feb. of 2005.

you're right, screw time slips. too easily fabricated. i want a video of you at the track, pic of you next to the car showing the license plate in clear view, and then a scan of your drivers license.

i can't believe you're arguing auto vs. manual. it's not a subjective topic. 10/10 will tell you there's more with a manual than an auto. sounds like you've never driven a manual before.

I don't do it, but plenty of people do. And since they use street legal cars for the most part, one can imagine that these cars might be driven on the street at some point.

Though IMHO just the ability to pick a gear to enter a corner or hill in is more than enough to give the edge to manual, even on public streets. Plus the fun factor and the ability to engine brake properly...

Also, any manual with the same gearing as an auto WILL get higher mileage if driven correctly.

and who says he's rallying on public streets.
what if you want to take your AMG to the track?

i tow a lot with my Explorer. When i want it to downshift, it does a fine job. It's not a race car, nor will it ever be. Can it run high 13s in the 1/4 mile? Yup. Do i ever race it anymore? Nope. Does your average driver/commuter have the need for a high performance transmission? Nope. Feel free to reply, but it's now nothing more than a pissing match.

WTF?! I'd like to see your (obviously extensive) list of mods.

5.0 V8
4.10 Gears
Full Borla Exhaust
Mac Intake
Apten chip
Shift Kit

Um, you're saying you dropped 4 seconds off a 17 second car with a couple of bolt ons? You'd better have done something like this also.

I'm just curious, if your truck has never seen the dragstrip, how do you know it runs 13s?

not that i'm in the market for one, but still.

cause they have sh!tty manual transmissions that can't handle the power of that AMG beast? 😛

That and they cater to old men who find Corvettes beyond them.

stick is more efficient and eakes more power out of the engine. It also allows for tons more control. Example: say your brakes die, and the emergency doesn't stop you. You're screwed in an auto, but not in a manual. Plus, manual is a hell of a lot more fun.

Alot of sport cars have engine braking in autos. And some that dont have a seperate electronic engeing braking module.

Heck even mercedes' top end exotic is an auto. Sad. Mercedes sux0rs.
you've obviously never had a long commute
I'd expect more from a fanboi. I commute every day in bumper to bumper and I have never once considered an auto 🙂

And thats why the AUTO mcalren slr is now the fastest lap car in the world, beating the mclaren f1 BAD, and many other exotics.

notice i never argued what's faster. only which offers more control... a drivers car.

and 9 times out of 10, a good manual driver will be faster than an auto in "commuter" cars due to the lack of the power sapping tq converter and obviously the ability to control when to shift.

What does "fastest lap car in the world mean?" Just because the SLR laps faster in one track doesn't mean it will lap faster at every track. How do you know it beat the McLaren F1 bad? The McLaren F1 wasn't even timed on Top Gear.

Some of you dont even know what the McLaren F1 did to the LeMans 24 hours during its debut... there will probably be no other ROAD CAR that will dominate a field of dedicated race cars like it did.
