probably because you edited your post after original one. in conclusion, you have too much time on your hands. go do some community service or something.

btw, you lose, i win!

I know that prices depend on supply and demand:roll:...

I was just wondering why the system memory costs so much ..I mean look at the price of motherboards VS. memory. It seems that a MB would be alot harder to make and for R&D costs as well ?

so the companies that are making the memories racks in more money.

plus memory are much more valuable and more significant than other hardware.

i can buy a floppy drive for less than 5 dollars, but i can't buy a big jar of cookies for that amount of money. yet a floppy drive is probably harder to make by the avg person.

Well, if you know it's based on supply and demand, then how hard one product is to make over another is mostly irrelevant, no?

The reason I asked about the price and all is a little while ago I was browsing the memory Newegg and it hit me that the memory in my rig (Geil Golden Dragon 2x512 P3500) cost more then a PS2 & XBOx..(when I bought it)!!

What is so hard to understand about what Wingznut said? Supply and Demand has to do with scarcity of resources and the amount of labor to create a product.

Nevermind, you are an idiot. Fire, you, now. Bye.

That could be true in most cases, but I don't know how memory or motherboards are made, so I cant comment🙂

...but from a physical veiw, MB's have more componets, so I would think that there would be a larger error margin? Like I said, I dont know how each is made...

Do you understand what the word "irrelevant" means?

Then how did Pepsi's post, which quotes the same message, also end up above his? Owned 169% dipsh!t.

Doesn't seem so

Nevermind... I thought somebody could give me some info about how memory is made and what-not.... but everything always has to turn into a debate or start bashing🙁

Thanks for the Thread craps to keep the topic bumped😀

ATOT does NOT forget..

spider? cousin?

supply went down when everyone stopped making it. Now prices are back up. I remember 2 years ago you couldnt sell a 512 for 40$. now look.... lol.... I should have invested in obsolete memory.....

They are fabricated in clean rooms with a bunch of chemicals, equipment, people in suits, etc.

Memory is not that hard to make. I'm pretty sure that the cost is a 50% yield issue and 50% mark-up issue. The yield comes from the fact that larger memories will consume more area and anything that has a larger die size will have a greater rate of defect. That combined with the fact that you need a larger error margin since you need all 1 billion DRAM cells to work makes the overall yield lower. Lower yield = less working chips per wafer = $$$

That's my best guess.

Which is what I do for a living. 🙂

So, yes... I know very well how memory and motherboards are made. Yes, the chipset alone is significantly more complex than SDRAM. But like I said, that fact is completely irrelevant when comparing the retail price of each.

All you need to know, is that each BIT is basically a tiny capacitor, that has to be refreshed ever clock cycle or o, to keep it's charge. 1GB of ram is 2^30 capacitors in that tiny stick. The fact that RAM is as cheap as it is, is amazing.

aren't memory prices suppose to drop like a rock (ie: free after rebate deals will be back?) because of excess capacity?

Yup, 4mb was about $139 for me. Expeeeeeensive shait.
I had 2MB for $150 for a 386 back in ~'88. Wow, I somehow remember buying it with mom @ 11 years old. I didn't care about the money... I just wanted to play my damn NHL game.
