so the companies that are making the memories racks in more money.

plus memory are much more valuable and more significant than other hardware.

i can buy a floppy drive for less than 5 dollars, but i can't buy a big jar of cookies for that amount of money. yet a floppy drive is probably harder to make by the avg person.

Well, if you know it's based on supply and demand, then how hard one product is to make over another is mostly irrelevant, no?

The reason I asked about the price and all is a little while ago I was browsing the memory Newegg and it hit me that the memory in my rig (Geil Golden Dragon 2x512 P3500) cost more then a PS2 & XBOx..(when I bought it)!!

That could be true in most cases, but I don't know how memory or motherboards are made, so I cant comment

...but from a physical veiw, MB's have more componets, so I would think that there would be a larger error margin? Like I said, I dont know how each is made...

Memory is not that hard to make. I'm pretty sure that the cost is a 50% yield issue and 50% mark-up issue. The yield comes from the fact that larger memories will consume more area and anything that has a larger die size will have a greater rate of defect. That combined with the fact that you need a larger error margin since you need all 1 billion DRAM cells to work makes the overall yield lower. Lower yield = less working chips per wafer = $$$

That's my best guess.

Which is what I do for a living.

So, yes... I know very well how memory and motherboards are made. Yes, the chipset alone is significantly more complex than SDRAM. But like I said, that fact is completely irrelevant when comparing the retail price of each.

All you need to know, is that each BIT is basically a tiny capacitor, that has to be refreshed ever clock cycle or o, to keep it's charge. 1GB of ram is 2^30 capacitors in that tiny stick. The fact that RAM is as cheap as it is, is amazing.
