my dad bought my older sister a really expensive fake rolex for her birthday. Normally I'd think, what a complete waste of money, but the reason my dad bought it is because my mom has the same one (only it's real) and I've yet to find a person that can tell the difference without a 5 minutes hands on inspection between my mom's real one and my sisters fake.

(the real ones anyway) and even if they get muffed up, LV will fix/replace them for the lifetime of the product. when was the last time your vid card came w/ that kind of warranty aftter you dropped $400 for the latest and greatest for 6 months.. $500 to last a life time vs $400 that's good for a year, maybe two..

as for the 12k purse.. i guess if you got money to burn, you got money to burn...

Who says videocards can't last a lifetime? i've got an ISA videocard here that's almost 10 years old. When you're talking about is it's going out of date, and even then, it's at least a couple of years. I can guarantee you very few people stick to the same fashion for their lifetime... especially people who spend stupid money on fashion.

Take it how you will, but that's like getting one of those fake lamborghinis. People may think it's real, but you know it's not. It's a sad and showy thing to do. Really now, if you have to fake your way into having STRANGERS think that you are richer than you are perhaps your life could do with a recalibration.

Well heck, i can buy fake almost anything, and most people can't tell from just glancing at it. But i'll still rather pay $100 for a geniune DKNY shirt than a fake one in Chinatown.

my point on the purse was that while the nice expensive "fast" vid card becomes obsolete and become pretty much worthless in couple years, the purse which will retain it's value. and if someone can afford to buy another, when who cares? it's their money to blow

another is, why would you spend the money on a bimmer vs getting a cheap ole kia? yes it's a status symbol, but you also get what you pay for. and for you TL yuppies, save the comment for the i love honda thread. 😛 😀

Why does somebody color their hair, or buy luxury vehicles, or pay $50 for a meal when they can pay $5? Some people think a $20 shirt is the same as a $100 shirt... but in my eyes, there are certainly differences.

It becomes obsolete because there's something better, but it can certainly last a lifetime if taken care of. Same thing as your $500 purse. Do you really believe it's fashion will last a lifetime? No, it becomes obsolete as well. How many people still wear the same clothes they've had since 1985? Even if it cost them $500?
 
i think you have to factor in perceived value as well.

is a $100,000 really twice as good as a $50,000 car?

When the owner of a $20,000 Honda Civic adores his car more than the owner of a $100,000 Porsche, who got their money's worth?
