Audio clip of Linus Torvalds pronouncing the word "Linux"

You know what's funny about that is he says his own name as "lynn-us" not "lie-nus" which is how us Americans say the name Linus. So he might pronounce Linux as "lynn-ux", but Americans should say "Lie-nux" since it's named after him. Eh, but I'm not exactly mister language person, and since "lienux" sounds stupid, let's just stick with Linux. ;)

The same way you're suppose to say "Linux." It's a short I, not a long I.

Sorry to disappoint; every country on the planet doesn't follow English linguistic principles.

That being said: I've always pronounced it lynn-ux. My pronounciation was confirmed when Linus pronounced it on The Screen Savers many, many years ago.

.

You can roll your eyes all day long, but the vast majority of people discussing this are English speaking Americans. My point was that the proper pronunciation (lynn-ux) was in line with other similarly spelled words in the English language.

Well, it's not an English word.
Not that it matters, if the person you're speaking to knows what Linux is, (s)he's likely to know what you mean no matter how you pronounce it. :)
