Why does Linux pronouced like Lunix?

I hear many people pronounce it like Lunix. Yet it's spelt Linux? (oh the inconsistencies of English )

The same reason why some people pronounce "nuclear" as "nucular". They don't know the correct way.

The same way you're suppose to say "Linux." It's a short I, not a long I.
