Why does it take so long for firefox to dl something

The firefox download manager is so slow. To save small files like images that are already downloaded, it takes like 3-5 seconds, while other browsers are instant. I see this on versions 1.0+ on all types of computers.

I dunno. When you start a dl it peaks up to 100% CPU usage for a fair while, the donwload is instant, but it seems like starting and finishing the download takes ages. It "hangs" for maybe 2 or 3 seconds before it starts to dl.
