why does it take like 30-45 secs for windows XP to load?

When I do a fresh install of WinXP Pro SP1 it stays on the loading screen for 30-45secs. Where it should only take 15secs. I have a 1.4Ghz Athlon,ECS K7S5A mobo,128mb PC133,ect. I've tried 256mb PC133 to see if that fixes the problem but doesnt. Anyone what what could be causing it to load so slow? I mean its not loading any installed apps.
 
What kind of peripherals do you have attached to the computer ? And 128-256MB RAM is on the low-end for RAM. I have 384MB and it still takes about 30 secs till it quiets down to the desktop.
 
Make sure you have the latest BIOS and chipset drivers for your system. And yeah, 128-256 MB isn't exactly great.
 
i have a gig or ram Xp 1700+ and mine takes even longer. used to take 10 secs. the Loading bar only went by 2 times now its like 12. i didnt do anything other then install windows updates
 
Why do you only have 128meg ram! 😛
I think if you go to at least 512 loading times will be better. overall operation once in winxp will be a lot smoother as well. and also do as bfg10000 suggested - update to the latest BIOS - though for the k7s5a i dont think a new one has come out recently.
 
128mb is enough for loading ur pc. try this, right after booting up, check task manager and see how much ur peak commit charge is. i don't have a lot of junk preloaded, and its like 110MB most for me. that means its not thrashing the HD at all cuz of lack of memory, 128MB is fine.

load times is mostly harddrive speed.
 
I think the better question is why do you think it should load in 15 seconds? My AMD 2400+ doesn't load XP in 15 seconds, so why should your much slower machine do it faster?
 
In fact, I know a P4 3.0 won't load XP in 15 seconds either.

Use Bootvis to improve your boot time, but don't expect it to be 15 seconds no matter what.
 
its probably a network problem.

try to give your network card a manual network address and see if it helps.
 
Its not my system. And my 1700+@2400+,512mb PC3200,ect loads past the boot screen within 15secs and I haven't reinstalled WinXP on it in months. I wasn't talking about a full WinXP load to where your able to do stuff. I know I might have stretched it on the 1.4Ghz/128mb ram system but I was in a hurry. Anyway it turned out that the HDD was set to slave which was slowing it down. Don't see how but when I changed it to master it cut the time almost in half. The bar would go by 20 times where it takes 12 now.
 
i recall reading a page on the microsoft site after a link from the forum regarding bootvis and it said in no uncertain terms that bootvis does not increase boot-up times; it went on to say that a feature in xp kicks in every 90 days automatically to do this.

i have used it many times and got no noticable improvement [stopwatch in hand and all that] as have other members here...
 
Yeah, 15 seconds for that system is more than a stretch. My system takes about 15 seconds from cold boot to useable desktop. It's a Barton 2800+ and 1GB RAM. The system before that was a 1.4GHz Athlon (Pally) with 512MB RAM and took about 40-45 seconds to boot.

My 600 MHz athlon , 256 meg ram, Win XP only takes ~30 secs...what the hell do you guys have on your computers?! (btw, I just installed WinXP on a mobile k-6 with 64 megs of ram, it boots up fine too. Don't worry about the ram issue so much, especially booting XP. I've used 256 in XP and never once have had any issues.)
 
Oh yeah, I forgot to add. I've heard 3 or so of the patches really slow down the computer's boot process. That may be why.
 
That is a good point. I heard this too. Just don't know which ones. Pehaps SP2 with resolve these boot issues...yeah right and I'm Lord Lucan... 🙂

If one is that impatient, then go back to the days of Dos6.11 that booted straight into an OS...

Its not that long, really. Why the hurry?
 
Bootvis is not intended to speed up your system (where did you get that idea?). It is a diagnostic tool that lets you figure out why your system is taking so long to boot up.

I should also note that MS took BootVis offline or a while and it's possible that the new version is different than the old one. I cannot be bothered to download it and check.

These "issues" have already been resolved with rereleases of the affected patches. So unless you are still using some old downloaded versions of the patch, that's not the problem.

there is, don't remember exactly what settings, but when bootvis first was around I ran it. And my box sped up. It wasn't in my head, it would boot about 10 seconds faster. Was this because of Bootvis? I have no idea, the tutorial I read said it would speed up my system's boot process. But I believe it was Bootvis in addition to a reg hack somebody put together and released as a "boot utility"
