That sounds about right. When you copy a file from one partition to another on the same hard drive, the drive's read/write heads spend a lot of time physically traveling from source to destination and back on the drive. If you were copying from one drive to another, then it would be a lot faster.

Which hard drive in you main rig are you benching this against? Is it the OS drive or a data drive? Same question for your server. I had my WD800JB as my OS and data drive for a long time, and was absolutely amazed how much faster it is now that I'm using it for just data.

The only IDE disk that I have is a data drive only and it did a 800 MB file copy to itself in a little less than 2 minutes. Can someone out there with an IDE OS drive try this and see how long it takes?

I moved an 800MB test on my WD 40GB 2MBCache 2 paritions...
1:25 seconds using my pc below.
ctk:
Have you checked in the device manager to make sure what ultra mode its running? it should be in mode5 since its on ATA100...

Also do you have any other IDE devices on the same cable?
Is so just try removing the other device and see if it helps anything...

That seems really slow. I have an Maxtor 80gig 7200rpm 2 meg cache drive and an 800 meg transfer would be ballpark 2-3 minutes across partitions on a really old comp.

I moved the Asheron's Call 2 Demo file, 882mb, in 38 seconds.... Using 2 Western Digital 80GB 8mb cache Caviar drives... via onboard Promise controller in RAID 0.

I think large files is where the RAID shines. I seem to beat the non-raid folks by about 5x.

ya i checked the BIOS
no other IDE devices on the cable

i think i figured it out it
this MB i got from a friend and it didnt have the driver disk
and since i installed WinXP it picked up all the drivers needed for the MB even the audio so i never thought about it again since i was only gonna use this PC to download and hold stuff
but when i try moving files it took 4ever!!
so i went to www.ali.com the chipset maker of the MB and d/l the ultra IDE drivers
i tried it this morning b4 goin 2 work and a 150meg movie took only 10-20secs b4 it took like 2-3

I used icq for a long time (it works well, but it's been 2-3 years), but these days i mostly use CD's. you can also setup a FTP site and they can download from there.

2:40 for 700MB from one badly fragmented partition to another
0:30 from OS to Data drive.

all on my main rig (KT333, 2x WD600BB 5400Rpm)
