Why does it take 5+ Minutes to log off/shutdown

Every time i shutdown or log off it takes a good 5 minutes to shut down my PC. This started happening recently and I dont know why.

I am using windows vista 64 bussiness.

When i shutdown it just sits there, the cursor blinking RAPIDLY with the circle thing. Ive tried end tasking all applications before shuting down but it is still doing it.

Is there a program that will watch and see what applications are shuting down and what is hanging up?

Also, it hangs at startup. Just completely freezes and all of a sudden it zips right along and finishes everything.

Please help, this is annoying!

BTW: My PC is prime95 stable and my HDD has been Spinrited.

I don't run Vista yet, but when stuff like this happens I look for devices that are malfunctioning, causing their drivers to take a long time to fault out. That's usually more a boot-up issue. Have you checked both the Event Viewer and Device Manager for clues?

drivers are software....

Ive tried unplugging everything and it still does it.

Even viewer and device manager check out okay....

🙁

This is a rather fresh load of vista BTW: only a couple weeks old.
