Because their cable guys are no longer needed for an installation, so they'll charge you for whatever they can.

Are you in NYC? If so, I have the name and number of one of the managers and stock manager at the Park Ave So. retail location, I can give it to you when I get home tonight. The drones on the phone are worthless, sometimes these guys can get you stuff that the phone reps say they can't...it's a long shot though, they want to rip you off witha n install fee because they won't get any $$$ from PPV with gen1 CableCARDs.

they program it?

Anyways, they gotta make $$$ some how so they figure they'll charge you for it.
I laughed my ass off when they wanted to charge me $50 to come and setup my TWC Hi-def cable box. I mean come one how fvckin hard is it to plug in a Red/Green/Blue cable from my cable box to my TV! jeez...

They do charge you for the air, they call it "shop supplies".

Built in HD tuner means you can receive HD over the air or unencrypted HD signals. A cable card allows you to get rid of your dig. cable box and plug the coax directly into the TV. The cable card does the decrypting.

About a year ago, I had to argue with them over the phone cause of some BS. They wouldnt give me the HD-DVR because they didnt believe I had a HDTV. They wanted me to come down to their center, show them the manual (which I didnt have), and then they wouldnt let me self install it. I told them that I could install it myself in a second, while deep down Im thinking not only could I install it, but Im probably going to have to fix what the cable guy does wrong.

Eventually they give, and they offer me free installation by the cable guy.

He comes, and he starts hooking it up. With the standard composite cables. I told him not to bother, he asked me why not, and I showed him how to properly hook up an HDTV with component cables and coaxial digital audio. He was dumbfounded.

The only thing their cable guys are good for is running the cable around your house.
