Hi,

This is getting on my nurves. No matter who i talk to. After 20 minutes of chating ICQ freeses for me and the person i'm talking to.. We send a message and it just stays there saying its sending but never does... we both ahve to restart our computers and get back on for it to work. What the heII is the problem??

On my system Icq is very stable, icq might be uncovering system instability that you did not know you had.

icq takes wayyy too much memory. it has too many features, yet almost none of them are useful.

i agree with potz on the useless features... as for connection and stuff, icq DOES seem to take way too long to send messages and stuff via modem, but it's smooth as silk on broadband...

I have been using ICQ for more than 4 years now and mine is rock stable. Yes it takes up a lot of memory, yes it has all those features that noone uses. But ICQ is the "standard" of IM. Everybody is using it, so I have no choice.

But I would really like a small fast IM with only messages and file transfer support.

The vast majority of people who have ICQ are not happy with it but as already mentioned it is the "industry standard" - usual situation in life where the best is not always successful... Betamax vs VHS, real food vs McDonalds.. :)

The main thing that really pisses me off is where it decides to hang on launching the program :( thats a very regular occurrence and nearly everybody I know that has 2000b has the same problem :(

I have heard people complain about ICQ all the time, but I personally have never had a problem with it, never crashed me, always responsive, doesnt eat up my resource at all.

ICQ's behaviour is very erractic on my system. Somtimes it sends messages really quickly. Other times it takes ages!! On a modem sometimes I am getting 5.2k/s file transfer rate sometimes it's down to 3xxbyte/s from the same person!!

<<Somtimes it sends messages really quickly. Other times it takes ages!!>>

Only when your connection is losing, or the other side's connection is losing will cause messages to take a long time to send. Otherwise there is no reason. Usually when Im chatting with someone, and his connection loses, my message box will remain there unsent because it couldnt find the other side. So it's not ICQ's problem

<<On a modem sometimes I am getting 5.2k/s file transfer rate sometimes it's down to 3xxbyte/s from the same person!!>>

That sounds like an ISP problem to me, either yours or the other side's.

All I ever got on ICQ was a bunch of spam and 14 yr old girls wanting to "cyber"..

I'll stick to ::gasp:: AOL's instant messenger and keep my name known to only the friends I care to talk to...

Never have problems with it.

Oh yea? There is no restriction on AIM, whoever finds you can add you to their list without authorization, that *gasp* SUCKS! AOL can kiss my ass to have me switch sides.

chrisisbored, I have news for you: those 14 year old girls wanting to "cyber" are 50 year old gay men trolling for young boys :p

I've had icq for years, never had many problems really. I have always used the part where you have to be authorized and my profile is pretty much just my email and first name, aside from the random porn spam its been good.

Well first of all you are probably running ICQ2000 which is bloated beyond belief.
Second, there have been no "official" or "final" releases of ICQ they've all been Alpha or Beta releases.
Third, your connection probably sucks.
Fourth, you're probably running a different build then the people you are communicating with (although they should be compatible they aren't always).

I can say for myself and all my friends, we all use ICQ 99b and haven't had any resource hogging, or crashing EVER.

You can get icq98b from RocketDownloads.com. That's what I use because its smallest and fastest. As for your sending problem, you need to set it to "send through server to all users" in the preferences. :)
