Many things that begin 'good', turn out 'bad/evil'; Take the UN, our government, Christian churches, The New Deal, etc.. The crutches that were needed then are now additonal weights that slow us down.
you can add religion to this list it was good on getting us away from the mass chaos and into building a civilization but its pretty much served its purpose and is causing more chaos than its solving now
Look closer. I did. I'm not including any other religions, as I have little knowledge to back anything about others up with (in this regard, anyway).

can God created the rock big enough that even he could not lift up?
Yes. Because if God is imnipotent, he could make a rock that is omnipotent. If he tries to pick up the rock, the rock can know that it is NOT being picked up with equal willpower.

agreed, Gooberlx2

i grew up just as you did (w/ little religious influence). but after my grandfather passed, my mom has become very religious. i feel religion is a way many people cope with their fears, mainly death. they don't to believe that after they die that it's over. that's why religions have afterlife, so people wont cease to exist, even after death.

Ironically enough, working in tech has made me believe. If there wasn't some higher power interfering we would have blown ourselves up a million times by now.

Not to bash, but for the people who believe there is no God how did Earth and life on it come to exist?

How is that humans have such a high degree of intelligence as opposed to other animals? If you look around in nature or in the animal kingdom there are many different types of species who have similar levels of intelligence (dogs and cats or dolphins and chimps) why are there no other animals with the intelliegence of man?

How is that the Earth is postioned just the right distance away from the sun to prevent it from burning up or freezing? Why is Earth the only known planet out of possibly billions that appears to support life?

this guy is the perfect example of why i think people who cant figure things out use god as an excuse for it being there

You totally missed the entire point of my thread

religion is a befief. If you don't believe that is your own thing. Thats the definition of a religion. I really don't know the point of your post.

haha, I had a very similar thought a few years ago. "If it weren't for God, humanity would have killed itself off a long time ago."

Without reading any post besides the OP, the existence of so many differente beliefs and religions is one of the main reasons I do not believe in a god. For the one being who is all powerful over this world, he/she/it sure puts up with a lot of lies and misbeliefs.

It's rediculous, really.

I believe that God exists simply because I don't think its logical to conclude that the Earth and it's inhabitants could have came about by means of evolution.

I think what you really mean is you believe god exists simply because you don't understand how earth and it's inhabitants came to be. "God did it" is a very easy way to get out of answering the question.

Watched a program earlier today talking about famous scientists that believe/believed in God and how they viewed it through their science studies. Mentioned that the probability of an Earth with all it's life forming by chance is estimated to be about 1 in 100^123

May surprise some people to find out that Stephen Hawking believes in God.

God is created by us, its easier to push things to a higher being. God is like a psychological release, its easier to pray to something and hope it happens, even if it doesnt you can go, oh hey at least i tried, god musnt have wanted it to happen. rather than knowing, oh crap, nothing is gonna help me.

Considering how vast the universe is, I think those are pretty good odds.

Just do a google search on Deism and be done with it.

Agreed.

It sounds like the OP is a deist to me. It's within reason to believe in god/creator and reject organized religion at the same time.

Thomas Paine's book 'the age of reason' might be of interest to you.

Also;
Deism and America

"The difficulty for most of us in the modern world is that the old-fashioned idea of God has become incredible or implausible. When we look through our telescopes and microscopes, or when we just look at nature, we have a problem. Somehow the idea of God we get from the holy scriptures doesn't seem to fit the world around us, just as you wouldn't ascribe a composition by Stravinsky to Bach. The style of God venerated in the church, mosque, or synagogue seems completely different from the style of the natural universe. It's hard to conceive of the author of the other." Alan Watts (i dont think he was a deist, but still a good quote)
