a friend of mine put his "dead" 360 in a pc case w/ a nice amount of fan, needless to say it is back to life and working fine...

I don't want to spend $300-$400 to get a refurb a few months later. Do they atleast give you a new one? If I buy it I would do it from walmart so I can exchange in 3 months for a new one. Better than 30 days at BB.

Do you have a Costco membership?

Yeah? They also have a 3 month policy?

No, lifetime satisfaction guarantee. If my Xbox 360 dies a year from now, I can return it to Costco and let them deal with Microsoft instead of dealing with the warranty return myself. My plan, if my 360 ever dies, is to buy the new one first (at Costco), either switch out the hard drives or transfer the data between them, then return my old one. Save your receipt (they'll take a return without a receipt, but at the current selling price I believe).

Also, the new 360s with the HDMI are an updated design based off the Elites. It gets a second heatsink on the GPU, more secure seating on the motherboard for the GPU, and better ventilation. It'll be interesting to see the difference in reliability between the revised 360 and the original.

where does the better ventilation come from?

The holes for ventilation are slightly larger.

are we talking .010" larger per hole or more like .125"?

I haven't measured them but the holes on the back of the new 360s with HDMI look larger than the holes on the older 360s.

My disc drive sometimes freezes while playing games and exits with an error saying the disc can't be read. I don't think the MS warranty covers this so I'm thinking of getting a seperate standard warranty for all problems.
From other threads, MS charges $100 to replace the DVD-ROM drive after the first year. So if the warranty extension is $30(?) it seems like a wise move.

Yeah, I would get a warranty through MS or a third party. I got a two-year warranty from Overstock.com for $35 on my 2nd 360. So, I'm covered for three years actually since MS extended their initial warranty to 1 year.

I bought my 360 from Overstock and got the 2 year warranty as well. So the Overstock warranty tacks onto the original one making a 3 year warranty?

Everybody needs to be careful about in-store warranties. Due to the number of RROD and the new warranty, some of them are starting to turn away people with that problem and are forcing them to go with the manufacturer's warranty.

I am on the fence about getting this optical drive fixed, or just putting the money twords a "reliable edition" later this fall.

what's wrong with you people? I would never buy an Xbox again if I were treated so poorly. You guys are happy throwing your money at MS?!

I wish I could run a scam job like that and get away with it.

Of course, insurance companies only want to insure the 'reliable' products. GRR that makes me so mad!!!

Even with a failure rate of 50%, half of all owners have your good luck.

Playing with probability and a 50% rate:

50% have never had a probem. Woohoo!

50% have RRoD at least once, . . . d'oh! . . . but also of that 50%:

25% are on their 3rd xbox
12.5% are on xbox # 4
6.3% have had FOUR failures and cry themselves to sleep waiting for xbox 5 to arrive back from MS
3.1% have had 5 failures.
1.6% have had a really bad year, with about 18 weeks of it spent waiting on 6 replacements

. . . and given 10 million sales, the 0.78% with 7 failures would include 78,125 unlucky sods.

I doubt the failure rate is 50% though, my guess is in the 30-40% range.

even if it is "only" 30% that is still a crazy amount. imagine if 30% of all c2d cpus died in less than 6mos? or all skt 939 dcs...or 30% of the us power was out...
