linkCal is short for "California." Why just "California"? It's the same reason the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor is just "Michigan" or the University of Texas in Austin is just "Texas" -- Berkeley is the oldest and premier institution of the University of California system. Hence, the school is called California, or just "Cal" for short.

Another reason is that they try to distinguish themselves from the other so-called "inferior" UCs, now that there are so many branches.

That's not true at all. Cal is "Cal" because when it was founded, it was the ONLY UC school. Therefore, when you said "Cal," the ONLY interpretation was The University of California, at Berkeley. The name Cal predates all the other UCs.

Oh, well yeah, of course, because of their football team, but UCLA is by far more popular for their education.

University of California, Berkeley is called "Cal" because it was the first campus for the system. The city is not called "Cal."
