Why does eMule suck so bad?

I was told it's the second-best way (aside from newsgroups) to get Movies and non-Music.

Well... 500+ sources with 1 connection at 0.8K/sec doesn't thrill me much.

Of course I turn on uploads just to see and I'm serving 15K/sec upstream constantly.

Another failure of a P2P network.

Yeah, it's weird. I recently got the benefit of DSL. I was all excited to finally get to download a material that I thought would take me forever with my 56K. Well, guess what! I was disappointed with EMule. I couldn't get more than 3KB. I was averaging about 1KB. Then I opened the manual to see if it was due to my setting. I followed the port forwarding instruction (to take away the lowID message) and disabled my firewall too. Well, it was still no go. Then I read that it depended upon how much credit I had. Well, I gave up and left my computer running overnight. Can you believe people were able to download from me at a speed of 15KB . . . people that hardly shared theirs with me. In spite of the sharing, I still average a low speed. The closest I come is about 6 KB. And that's like just two generous persons sharing. The rest are like 1-2KB on average. *Sigh!*

I saw this supposed code for Edonkey and Overnet(?) to increase your credit, but I couldn't do that. It seems like too much work. I wouldn't want to download the programs anyway when people are bragging about Emule being slightly better than Edonkey.

emule can suck. It takes a long time to get going. I can get between 14 and 50kb/s. But thats on highid, and also an older version. v.28 I think.

the speed may suck but it has everything. the completeness in selection and quality of the files on other file sharing networks cannot be compared to edonkey network. and most files are guaranteed to be complete. it might take 5 days to get, but you can be sure you are getting it. and did I mention it had everything?

kazaa blows. really poor selection. i can never find what i want on there unless it's something really popular and even then it's usually a rip instead of full iso. and it's only got really popular movies. the mp3s have crappy bitrate. not to mention the many fakes. i use it as a last resort.

winmx. what a joke. i can never connect, and even if i do i rarely get a completed file.

irc/usenet - hard to find exactly what you want when you want it, unless you are a downloading junkie who download anything

at least these people haven't heard about IRC. thats the only way to get the latest stuff at high speeds.

Any P2P network is only as good as the folks on fat pipes sharing an insane amount to leechers.

The real problem is that most people are leeches, and that even if they weren't, even "high-speed" connections are so upload bandwidth constrained that there will always be many more people trying to steal than share.

I'd rather let it download a couple days and know it's a verified file than wait and see if it's good or not when it's done.

If a file has 500 sources I usually get decent speeds 30-40k

That's the thing though. I was getting 300-500 sources on the few things I searched for. If I got 0.8K/sec from 500 different sources, well, hell, my DSL would be saturated at about 250 sources. Even 50 sources downloading would be adequate at 0.8K/sec from each. But I took a look at the queues, and it's rediculous. I think in the span of an hour I never was connected to more than 2 sources on any given file. That's just rediculous. If the P2P application is going to chunk the file, even a 56K modem user can upload to 10 different people at 0.8K/sec.

In essence, the network and idea behind it is wonderful. But somebody forgot to implement something there.

Oh, and I avoid IRC like the plague. It's just scary.

Overnet = eMule with a slightly "sleeker" interface. It's still the eDonkey network, and yes, I tried it, and yes, I got about 1K/sec download, assuming anything downloaded at all.

I think you're confused by what eMule means when it says 500 sources. 500 sources is just the total number of people who have a portion (not even all) of the file that you are looking for. When you download a file with 500 sources, beside your download, it will show you a number that looks something like 85/500 (1) .

That means that you are queued for download (and not actually downloading from) 85 of 500 people, and are currently downloading from one person.

There are alot of tips and tricks to get emule working correctly.. the number of sources.. what server you're on.. your version number.. id number etc etc can all have an effect on it.. I prefer emule because I know that 1. I won't get a virus and 2. I know that the files are legit.. it might take a little bit longer, but I don't get 1k a sec.

Example:

I started downloading encarta 5 cds yesterday afternoon.. I'm about halfway done with the whole thing in 1 day.. my speeds are decent, they're not 80k a sec, and it fluctuates alot but I'm in no rush.. but its not bad considering I've been working and sleeping since I started it up yesterday..

I've gotten as high as 220kb/sec. I average ~60-80kb/sec. I do keep 100+ downloads going for days at a time. The key is staying in the queue lines and moving up in them. When i first start emule, i'm usually at < 10kb/sec. But after a few days i'm pulling 80kb/sec easily.

your using eMule wrong

it is by far the best way to get unlicensed goods and freeware ;)

the secret

have about 50-100 files on your queue, then forget about it and have it running all the time (cap uploads @10k)

check up on it in about 5-10 days

then it's like christmas everyday

"hey i got 5 files today"
"hey i got 12 files today"

etc etc etc

Overnet is a completly separate network without central servers. eDonkey & eMule are on the same network that has centralized servers.
