I know dell collects from certain states, like in the post above, but it is also law that internet venders must charge sales tax for all inter-state commerce.

Please show me a link to that. AFAIK that is not true.

i don't know if its a law, but most vendors do it if they are in the same state as you.

Not in Oregon. No sales tax here, baby!! :D

I would bet for smaller expensive items like monitors and laptops you could save a lot of money.

Maybe I could go in business doing that. I already run 3 profitable businesses, why not another?

Nebraska Use Tax
002.05 Consumer's use tax will apply to the following:

002.05A Purchases for delivery in Nebraska from out-of-state retailers when the applicable sales and use tax has not been paid;

002.07 The amount of consumer's use tax is computed by multiplying the purchase price of the property or service by the applicable rate in effect at the time of use. The rate applicable for consumer's use tax is the same as the rate for sales tax.
Just since Dell doesn't collect it doesn't mean you aren't legally required to pay it. True, no one does pay it since it isn't enforced. But legally, you are required to.

I know that, but who pays it? No one, including me. It's not enforced.

on one hand now that im on the other end of this deal (getting taxed) i could see why its not hot.

but i think if uncle sam should charge tax on the web, it should be a federal tax rate lower than that of the state sales tax. something in the range of 2%-3% is fair, then split the profit to the 50 states according to population/need (such as hurricanes etc)

i still buy a lot of stuff from sites that are not in NY, but i wouldn't mind that much if ALL SITE charged this small tax rate. it will stop people evading the tax and also fair to those who are being charged a ridiculous 8-9% state tax. oh well it will never happen though

The amount of tax and shipping added to your order depends on where you have asked for the product to be shipped as well as on which products you've chosen to purchase. Dell Catalog Sales LP currently collects applicable sales tax in California, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin. In other states, the purchaser is responsible for remitting the use tax on all taxable items to the appropriate state tax authorities. Dell does collect sales tax for On-Site Service contracts in all applicable states.

phew no MA here;)

How long does it normally take Dell to charge your account and ship? Maybe I've been spoiled by Newegg.
