Why does Civ 3 run like crap?

I have a celeron 1000 with 448 megs ram. All my other games run perfectly but civ 3 does not. Is it supposed to scroll so badly? When I scroll I get litterally about 1 frame per 2 seconds. It makes it quite impossible to scroll in this game.
 
It's not that it runs bad for me...but the wait time between turns is roughly ten minutes sometimes. and I am not lying on this one. It gets really unbearable..and I have all of the animations off. 🙁
 
It pretty much sucks on my computer. I'd almost prefer the graphics be Civ 2 style if that would improve performance. I don't think there's any reason why the game should perform so badly.

You guys serious?? I was sure it had something to do with my system or something. That's PATHETIC that this game is so slow. So nobody else can scroll either? Even when I have almost all black right at the beginning I can't scroll for crap. I have to click where I want to be and wait.

In actual fact I hate the game. I liked civ 1 and 2 kinda but could never totally get into them. I played civ3 for about an hour tonight and it was the same. I just find the game terribly frustrating and at times it's exceptionally non-intuitive. You can sit twidling your thumb for about half an hour (as I did just now) and all I had to show for it was something like 1-2 settlers and 4 workers. Yeah that's fun!

Really though this is beside the point. I know it's a great game for many other people - but this performance issue is quite surprising.

This is win2k prof if that helps and since I don't know what smooth window scrolling is I'd have to say it's turned off 🙂 Vid card is a gf2 mx w/ 32 megs.
 
I was thinking it was MY system too! athon 750. Yes, the scroll sucks like sh1t. I would still be plahing it after my 13+ hours just to get to the 1700's if just the scroll worked better.
 
Surprised this didn't hurt the reviews more. I can play a game of AOE2 with a buttload of people, or more recently Stronghold with a population of 450. It has more people doing more stuff and it's graphics are infinitely better than Civ3's and it still scrolls quite nicely, but this which is basically civ 2 with better graphics...I wonder what it's doing in the background.
 
hmm.. should test this game out on the athlonxp1600.. wonder if it'd suck.... btw, stronghold runs so much nicer on this machine now!... unfortunatly i gotta start all over... and have been delaying it... how has the online play been?
 
IO haven't tried the online yet - my brother had a game but hasn't replied to my damn email! Seriously though with a population of 450 on one of the economic missions and a CRAPLOAD of stuff going on the game didn't run that bad!
 
The scrolling is decent for me, well i use other means sometimes, like clicking where i want to be on the small map.. but the wait between turns is the worst. it literally turned me away from the game.. that is the weakest thing ever... it got so it was 2 minutes between turns sometimes and this is on an Athlon 1500...

I don't know for sure but I'm wondering if some of the reason it's that slow is because when it's the computer's turn instead of doing all the unit movements at once it does them in sequence, so even if you can't see the computer unit it may make one a few screens over move and do it's crap, then go to another one and make it do it's turn all in sequence. Or is there more to it than this? Eitherway you guys have set in my head my desire now to delete the game 😛
 
i have civ 3 on my computer, and it runs fine...when i scroll, it clicks on by, not too slow. umm...why dont u try turning all the animations off..it sure seems like a pain.. but anyway, check my specs. i really dont think its your hardware. maybe u can check micropose for some answers...

I agree with you that the interface could be way more intuitive.
They tried to make the interface much more simpler and easyer to use than in Civ2. But it ended up just being simpler and as hard or harder to use.

The scroll is Ok for me, but you would probobly call it bad.
I don't really find this that bad, but I see how people would. In Civ2 I don't even remember you being able to scroll the screen by moving to the edge of it, so I don't do it that often in civ3.
 
Scrolling is fine for me even on the huge map, the thing that bugs me is the wait time between turns. It's takes way too long!
 
Which set of video drivers are you using? There are some problems with scroll speed if you're using the latest Detonator XP drivers. Roll back to one of the older drivers and that should fix it. The next Civ3 patch will also fix the scrolling problem.
 
This may or may not help, but my K6 box was scrolling OK with the zoomed in view ('Z'). It made the turns go by a little bit more bearable.
 
I borrowed a trial version from Morpheus 😀 but I don't play it cause you have to learn how, and learning how isn't fun, it's work.

Yeah I agree moonbeam. I'm willing to put in a little time, but the thing about civ games I find is that until you know really well how to play you suck. WIth other games you kind of learn as you go and tweak how you do it and what not but with the civ games if you don't know certain things you suck. Like placing a town for instance. I place it where it looks like it would work out but it never does!
 
crap! i vaguely remember a certain type of video card having the exact same problem with that game... i dont remember anything about it though - what kind of video card do you have?
