Why does asparagus make your urine so horribly rotten?!?

We often eat asparagus at my house (my wife make it divinely... toss in oven on broil with some light oil and Kohser salt) but then for the next 12+hrs my urine is just rancid smelling. I know its a common phenomena but why does it do it so pungently with asparagus? and is there anything else out there that has a similar effect?

Its just weird.

you're just diluting it then. I realize that would work, but I'm asking WHY it stinks in the first place?

Thanks for like FoBoT. I know I could have googled, but I thought it'd be an interesting topic :)

"This probably doesn't qualify as red-hot science, but it's warm enough to spark differing opinions."

Eeeeww.

"Merck also notes the asparagus connection and, most intriguing, warns that methanethiol may be a narcotic in high concentrations."
So what was that a few days or weeks ago about meth addicts collecting urine? Maybe they need to start eating asparagus to improve its potency. Sure the chemical is not the good meth we all know and love, but it's at least got "meth" in the name.

I did not read any of the links but I heard off a Discovery Channel show that not everyone can smell the stinch from asparagus pee... only some people can while others can not.
