Why does America hate its teachers?

Teaching in South Korea for two years opened up my eyes to how badly teachers are treated in America. In Asia and mostly every where else teachers are respected. In America teachers are demonized and considered lazy. Their jobs are scrutinized, and they are told every time that they are to blame for society's ills.

I see the hate for teachers on ATOT. I wonder how many people who distrust teachers could actually do their job for a year. Teaching is not easy, but you wouldn't know it from the way people act. It's a bad time to be a teacher.

We should treat our teachers with better respect. Sadly, I don't think that's going to happen.

Personally, I have had very good teachers and some low life scum sucking asshole teachers. It all depends on "their" curriculum. I had a speech teacher in high school try to brain wash us by saying we needed to listen to NPR. Now WTF does NPR have to do with public speaking? I personally believe that academia is a liberal institution of bull shit proportions. Just look at our college's and university's. For me, being a staunch conservative is a death sentence on campus and I would be frowned upon if I didn't follow their Liberal play book.

Lets not forget the crap of zero tolerance, meatless Mondays and Common Core.

They say teachers are under payed. Well, why the hell did a bunch of union thug Chicago teachers take a Vegas vacation for a meeting or some shit. Kids can't even read at a 6th grade level in high school FFS! I know it ain't a wage issue, it's a teacher issue. Like I said in the beginning. There are good teachers and there are bad teachers.

I never graduated high school because I could not stand the indoctrination. I went to a place called Job Corp which was even worse. I taught my self basic grammar and writing and got my GED, then latter a high school diploma. The so-called teachers at Job Corp didn't do a fucking thing and the campus had condoms all over the place. I was going to get a shoe box and mail the condoms to the Department Of Labor, the assholes who fund the place and let them know what goes on in here. Needless to say I got my ass terminated and lost my money I had earned for getting a GED and high school diploma. As far as I'm concerned the feds owe me about 4 grand.

Sing it institutions! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GXE_n2q08Yw

All kids should be taught by nuns till about the 8th grade.

Even if they don't get properly disciplined at home - those evil nuns sure know how to do it.

This an opinion piece. Oh god...just another government worker wanting to get their piece of the pie.

The link I pasted is an opinion piece. My statement is an opinion. I'm sure there are people who are going to disagree with me. That's fine with me. I like to listen to both sides.

In regard to SK and the teacher's union I believe that they don't have much leverage. Not on the same level as the teacher's union in America.

I would suspect kids in general have more respect for elders over there
and teachers can probably apply a little more discretionary discipline when needed?

Kids do show more respect to their elders in SK, but that's quickly fading. Still, you would never see a Korean kid talk back to their parents like our kids do in America. I remember when I was a teen. I'd cuss at my mom and dad all the time. I was a punk.

I don't necessarily agree that our children disrespect our elders in America. I think it's that the younger generation rebels and goes against anything that they perceive as outdated and old. It may look like disrespect, but I don't think it is.

I was at a government school in Thailand last week. It was very interesting. For 45 minutes every morning the children and Thai teachers stand out in the sun, and they have to sing the kings song. It reminded me of military school. Unlike America you don't question authority. You go with the flow. Teenagers in Thailand don't question their parents. They all have to wear school uniforms. It's the law.

I think it mostly comes down to parenting and we are probably the worse.
At this rate we will be just like the Idiocracy movie in a few generations.

Yes, the parents fail at home on their part so they expect the teacher to be the parent.
So naturally the parent blames the teacher for the parenting failures.
And to make it worse, when a teacher does have a positive effect on a child, a life lesson that the parent should be the one learning, the parent feels the teacher has crossed the line and again blames the teacher for making their child more society friendly.
Like if the parent is openly anti gay or anti black, and the child comes home from school telling mom she needs to rethink the bigotry, guess who the parent is going to go after for the child's attitude change?
Lets face it, the good seldom rubs off, but the bad always rubs off.
If the parent is a bigot, they fully expect the child to also follow in their footsteps.

When the child is exposed to racial diversity and social diversity in the class room, the parent is not going to like that change in their child.
For gods sake... their white daughter might even want to date a black boy.
Or Billy may decide to come out to mom and dad that he is gay.
So who gets blamed? The teacher.
It's a lose lose situation for every teacher.
Teachers are not the issue of failure, it is and has always been the parent.
More so in today's world where the parent just doesn't have the time or energy to spend quality time with their child.
Hell, says the parent, that's why I pay taxes to send my kid to school.

And so the lowlife redneck parent thinks it is just fine and dandy for Billy to fight and cause mischief. Helps make him a man, as it were. And how dare that teacher have an opinion that goes against the parent wishes. How dare that teacher call out the child or the parent when Billy is obviously headed for major jail time one day.
Old mom rather stay drunk and passed out.
And just blame the teacher for their child's actions.

You just applied a bullshit attribute to 300 million people with no evidence.

American teachers would sad at your compete lack of fucking logic.

If all the grown ups are talking about how teachers are scumbags and leaches, how do they expect the children to respect the teacher? And if the pupils doesn't respect the teacher/school work nothing is going to get done.

It shows.

It's called an opinion. I never stated that it was fact.

:colbert:

You asked the question WHY does America hate its teachers.
That is not called an opinion.
That is called moving ahead with bullshit logic and facts.

Do better next time. Or I will punch your gonads.

Most teachers are not underpaid. Some are, but most are not.

The only work 9-10 months a year typically and receive generous pensions and benefits.

Additionally, they do not have to put up with the rat race of climbing the corporate latter or butt kissing clients.

Inner city teachers and some teachers who deal with troubled students deserve more money and more recognition, I can image how hard that is.

At my high school, the teachers admitted their job was easy. It was a wealthy high school and fights and arguments were rare, serious drugs were rare, test scores were naturally high without much teacher involvement because the students were just smarter and their parents involved. They had it easy.

I blame teachers unions. How much sway do they have in South Korea?

So much this for us. They have a sweet deal here in that the avg experienced teacher makes 6 figures, including kindergarten teachers. Including the ones in VERY poor performing districts. And what's worse is that new blood can't come in because they pretend to have open interviews but just end up hiring someone's relative for the few openings that ever come about. Corrupt. Our school tax portion of our property taxes are almost 10k/yr by itself thanks to their salary and pensions.

I've met plenty of them and while they are VERY nice people like you and I, they are killing the rest of us just by being in these public sector unions where WE are the direct source of their income. Extremely selfish, no two ways about it. I hate NY and their unions with a passion.

Tell me this is not disturbing.

That includes some of the poorest and poor performing districts too.

And before you claim cost of living, that's really just mostly NYC Manhattan. If you have dual income, one person making just $70k is still pretty good in the rest of the area. I'd say that figure is more than enough for what teachers do and have to live through, not to mention their skillset. Instead we have teachers instructing kindergarteners at $124k/yr. I don't disrespect them or question their methods in school. But it's hard to live among them when they have their hands so far down our pockets we may as well bend over and ask for more.

1. They are union members. And the teacher's unions are among the worst.
2. They take advantage of tax payers.
3. Tax payers have to pay for their retirement and health care.
4. They complain about being under paid. However if they only work two thirds of the days that other professionals do, they should expect two thirds of the pay.

Taxes are a big issue. I live in NJ and it's the same. My guess is probably 85% of our taxes goes to the education system. I've met teachers that should never be in the teaching profession. They have zero passion. Then again I've met other people who are absolutely amazing teachers.

Nepotism is a big issue in certain towns. I've seen it. I can remember an opening we had one year. There were 65 applicants for one special ed opening. They had people who had 10+ years teaching experience. The job went to a new teacher, because his mother was on the school board. He should have never gotten the job. The students are the ones to suffer.

Most teachers have to continue their education. Most have Masters and other certificates. These are not easy and take a lot of time and money to complete. Would poverty pay be adequate? You get what you pay for. No? Why is it that the North East continues to out pace the rest of the country. New Jersey was rated #1 in public education. Look at Mississippi, Arkansas and Texas. They continue to do poorly. Why? It's because they pay their teacher's poorly. You want a decent education system you have to pay for it.
