Why does a pretty white female who disappears while in a foreign country get SO MUCH coverage?!

Good question. I guess the implication is that it might be terror related? Didn't I see something on the news the other day that the investigation had "expanded" beyond Aruba??

It's a foreign country. Not that there's anything wrong with it, but their attitude might be "lets keep Americans vacationing at home". Spend your cash in the US, not on some peon island.

The war is bigger than you might think.

It's probably smaller than you think though. The media just needed new B.O.O.H.O.O. fodder.

The requirement for "EVERYONE" to have a passport to get back into the country ($97 per passport) will do the same for many. The casual trip to Mexico and Canada will be a thing of the past.

Anyone know if you'll need a passport on these cruises to the Bahamas, etc? to get back in?

Your lives are so meaningless you would revolt if not constantly titillated.

This is by far the thing that I object to most about travel restrictions, and I have a passport! Border economies (on both sides) will be decimated. There was a lot of money that was made from families and students going back and forth across the border on day trips. I think either it will be retracted after a while, or the govenment should reduce the cost of passports for some time period before the phase-in, or when they get the federally standardized driver's or ID cards, they might allow the use of those.

One of the things about travel lately (especially airline) is that it sucks. High security/tax/visa fees, long waits, endless lines, endless security checks, rude personnel. I suppose I should be glad there's the extra security, but I feel sometimes like the government would not prefer people to travel at all. I believe it's one of the reasons the airline industry is in such bad shape -- people just don't enjoy the experience anymore.

I usually travel quite a bit internationally, but recently, even I have wondered if it's worth the hassle to continue.

CNN) -- The Australian government is offering to send a team of lawyers to help Schapelle Corby fight her 20-year prison sentence for drug smuggling in Indonesia.

its time to bomb indonesia

How is that sadder? She's still alive.

Edit: And she was caught win a ton of illegal drugs.

evidence is shady. the luggage handlers customs workers are known for smuggling things. the sentence is barbaric for a less than harmful substance. its not a good way to encourage tourism. snatch away the useful life of a young woman for basically nothing. it is total bullsh*t. after all the help they got from the tsunami they show zero compassion. f*ck them. next time they shouldn't get a dime. heck, retract current aid.

IMO because there has been no MJ verdict yet and she is a teen-age, white, blond, from the south.

If it were a teen-age, black, single mom, from NJ this would not even be on the news.

Real simple, the Corporate owned,Republican,Bush boot licking cable news companies don't report news anymore--well unless Clinton would get another BJ then we'd be in for 24/7 coverage. The disaster called Iraq,Downing Street memo's,Dick Cheney and Ken Lay making energy policy for the US,Novak OUTING a CIA agent, etc..etc.. ALL ignored by the big three so they can keep profits flowing in from advertisers. An invasion of a country will increase those profits 10 fold or more.

Those stories are not reported on by the Republican owned media so to fill time they HAVE to come up with another WHITE girl to report on daily. On the flip side watch FOX,they've already convicted MJ,want to know WHATS TAKING THE JURY SO LONG,and ALREADY doing stories on the jail he be in. Without a doubt the most ridiculous, irresponsible "reporting" I've ever seen or heard of. After this Aruba girl who will they need to dig up next? Guarantee you it won't be more than just a few days.

Because it makes better headlines and photos than "XXXX soldiers killed in Bush's stupid war."

But at least she's easier on the eyes than Michael Jackson.

Because life is not supposed to happen this way. A straight A, first class girl on her way to big things in life just senselessly murdered (rapped) in an popular tourist destination. No one cares if some hooker or girl who hangs with thugs and druggies gets "what was coming to her". But this is a girl next door people can identify with.

Actually, many would argue that life is supposed to happen this way. Survival of the fittest. If you can't survive out of your bubble, don't leave. That said, it is up to parents to instill a general awareness of the world around you, inside and outside your community. Parents these days want to sugar coat everything for their kids though, and tell them that as long as you do well in school and say your prayers everything will turn out alright. Well, the world isn't like that, and I find it very hard to feel sympathy for this girl. There are girls getting kidnapped, raped and killed all over the world, in much worse circumstances and for no fault of their own. That the media focuses on this girl is not only insulting to my intelligence, it is is insulting to the multitudes of "lowlier" people around the world who are suffering.

Your mind is in the gutter I can't help that. Just know since this incident Aruba is VERY concerned about maintaining a safe bubble for american and european tourists. Already talking about increasing police budgets and cameras everywhere.

Regarding the Australian girl; I'm afraid she's guilty. Drug runners, even bad ones, don't put drugs in random baggage and then attempt to retreive it later... sorry. I will say that 20 years for some weed is absurd, but in California, we give out life sentences for stealing a honey-bun or a bicycle (3-strikes law) so at least she will get out.

I don't know who or what they are, but the answer may lie in familial influence and money. God knows my senior class could have never afforded Aruba.
