why does a lowe resolution on my Dell laptop look worse than a higher one?

I don't get it. I just got my laptop today. Everything at 1600x1200 looks great, but when I take it down some (even to 1024x768) Windows keeps telling me these aren't "optimal" resolutions and everything looks kinda washed out. Any way to fix that?

LCDs have a single native resolution. Unlike CRTs, which can stretch pixels to fit the size of the screen, LCDs are really fixed resolution, and if you want to run at a lower resolution, it jsut kinda blurs the image across multiple pixels to make it look bigger. LCDs ONLY looks good at the resolution they were intended to run. If you don't want to run 1600x1200, take it back and get something that runs a lower res.

LCD's have a native resolution.

They have to guess on anything other than even multiples of their native resolution.

1600x1200 will look OK, as will 800x600, 400x300, etc.

I hope you didn't buy a laptop without knowing this.

1600x1200 is fine ... but what can I do to make the text larger? I've changed the DPI somewhat but it makes some of the other icons look weird (like the minimize/maximize/close buttons in IE are mega huge now).

I guess I'll just settle for the DPI (large fonts is way too large) custom setting and large icons. Doesn't look that bad. I'll get used to it 🙂 Guess I learn something new about computers every day 😎

Another question though: how will this affect games/DVDs? Will I have to run them at 1600x1200 as well? Or will lower resolutions look fine?

Things like that won't suffer as much as your windows desktop, think of it as free AA.
