why does a computer freeze?

Two things you might want to look at . . .

Check your temp levels. Some motherboards have a utility that will allow you to monitor it live while you are in Windows, and that would be best. Lacking that, when it freezes, force a reboot and go into CMOS and check it there. Note that it will cool quickly, so it won't show you as high as it was.

Another, and more likely prospect, is an outdated or corrupted video driver. A characteristic of that is that yhou get no error message, and it just freezes

i think that you may be right about the heat factor. how do i get into CMOS and once i am there what do i do?

MBM (Motherboard Monitor) is a very good utility to check on your PC's temperature. (I don't have the link right now so if you can do a search for it)
About your question though, I thought if it was running too hot, the computer doesn't crash. Instead, it simply reboots itself. That's how most people know when their PC is running too fast and hot because it keeps rebooting. Crashing is a different story. When a PC crash, either the hardware (memory, processor or motherboard) has a problem and maybe did an illegal function which caused everything to stop working and make your computer unstable at that time. There are many reason why a computer crash from hardware-wise to software. What did you do prior to when your computer started to crash?

well it would crash a lot but i think that might have been from a mobo driver that i installed so i uninstalled that, well I actually had the computer go back to the settings that worked. I think there my video card driver might have been messed up or something. maybe that explains all the freezes
