Why does a beautiful creature merit more compassion than an ugly one?

Does is damage us psychologically when we destroy something beautiful?

How meaningful is the difference between pulling the wings off an insect and stepping on it?

Is the decision of how to kill something a minor decision when balanced against the decision of whether or not to kill it at all?

Dude, I am going to kick your @ss.

Wow, you're right, beauty really does play a part in violence.

Pulling the wings of something requires us to look and acknowledge it. Stepping on it merely requires our foot to acknowledge it while our brain can play dumb. Plus, it's faster that way.

You are asking the very question that has enraged me for years.

A beautiful creature does not merit more compassion than an ugly one, but people assume outer beauty is equal to goodness.

Goodness, usefulness, and worth in general cannot be determined by outward appearances alone.

Sometimes, beautiful things are poisonous.

(this addresses your first question... for the others, I suggest paxil or xanax)

It is Nature, it is nurture.

We were born and brought up to give more merit to beauty.

Which reminds me, Mmmmmm Juggy girls on trampolines.

Everyone is assuming Locutus is referring to outward beauty, when he didn't specify one way or another.

OK then, I'll bite.

If you destroy something that is truly beautiful, meaning that it has INNER beauty, then you are hurting yourself as well. The human spirit has a need for inner beauty, because it imparts hope and gives joy to our sorry human race.

If you destroy something that is truly ugly, in an inner sense---and you have to be careful here, because I don't consider many things to be truly ugly---then you are doing the world a favor. Truly ugly to me would equal 'evil'. True ugliness inspires hate and despair.

Deep enough? Or should I dig my hole deeper? ;)
