why does 145FSB seem to be my limit w/ a KR7A and XP1700 under an SK6?

I don't know what the heck up. It seems as if EVERYTIME I hit ANYTHING above 146Mhz FSB I get the blue Windows XP "we're helping you really....we're not letting you start windows b/c we're HELPING you, so restart now" type of screen. I don't know what the problem is. I only have 1 stick of 256MB RAM from Crucial nonreg/ non ecc.

I have tried putting voltage to the chip, the i/o, and the RAM, but it seems no matter WHAT the settings, I can't seem to get above 145FSB.

My CPU is still locked. I'm NOT running RAID. I have a GeF2 GTS 64Mb, and SMC NIC, SB!Live Valueor Gamer, not sure. I don't know what's holding me back, but I hope that someone can tell me! BTW: I have and SK6 HSF. so, I don't think that cooling is a problem...is it? Is 51C too high?

I have prime95 and hardware Doctor too...so I can run stress and get temps.

Please, somone help! I KNOW that 1595Mhz is NOT my limit on this XP1700!!!

Hmmmm. Could be any number of things, like your NIC flaking out.

If you're at 145x11, that's 1595. It could be that that's as far as your chip will go; you may have gotten a 'bad' chip. What stepping is your 1700+?

i rekon that could be it...I think I'll start pullin' some stuff and see what i get 😀

here goes 😀

THX for the ideas grunjee! 🙂

I'm gettin this BLUE SCREEN ERROR that says:

a problem has been detected and windows has been shutdown to prevent damage to your computer

DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error, please restart your computer.
blahblahblah

does this basically mean that I'm HOSED or what? I have "good" stepping on my cpu, I don't exactly remember it...I'll post in a few...

any ideas?

i have EVERYTHING out ACCEPT for the VidCArd which is a GeForce2 GTS 64Mb

You will probably get better results if you unlock the chip and change the multiplier and FSB. As you drop the multiplier you can increase the FSB. You may also need more voltage to your chip.

I'm runnin' 1.8 @ the processor and something like 2.75 to the DDR which is Crucial 2100 256Mb stick.

temps are:
no Load
system 25
CPU 40.5

full load - running Prime95
it reboots itself...I think that I'm going to try to run 1.85 volts or something.

nothing but the AGP card in...not sure Y it's being a homo like this! 😀

What chips are on the stick of Crucial you have? I know the most common are Micron, but I have heard that sometimes Crucial places other chips on the sticks of Ram.

well...now I got 1.85volts to the CPU, reading about 1.87~1.90Volts

Prime95 under load
system 25degrees C
CPU ...

dang it! went back to see it, and yeah...it's rebooted again... 🙁

this is getting annoying! 😀

really? U think that's it?

I think my stepping is AGKGA Y

so, from what I understand...that's good 🙂 @ least it is here
THANKS For the HELP PEOPLE!
THANKS ShinSa

I really wouldn't expect much more from your cpu. Cpus with 'AGKGA Y' stepping generally don't do well at overclocking.

My XP1600+ (same stepping) is maxed at 148MHz, and is unstable at any speed with VCore over 1.8V.

Any increase in VCore above what's required for stability at a given speed just generates cpu heat.

Your cpu temp seems high, unless that's a cpu-loaded temp.

Hope this helps!

I like to disagree with you on this one. It might be true that AGOGA will clock better than the AGKGA, (not really conclusive) since it's what Xp2000+ uses, but it all boils down to luck.

Some people with AGKGA can clock thier CPU better than AGOGA and vice versa. I wouldnt give up if I were you till I eliminated the bottleneck, which seems to be your 133mhz rated memory.

hey THANKS for the suggestion there rogue1979 I'm gonna go try it out 😀

jm0ris0n I'm runnin' an ATA33 or 66 (not sure) Samsung 4.3Gb w/ my OS and a WD100GB 7200rpm
I know...it's ridiculous...but maybe someday soon...I'll get something TURBO installed in ther! 😀 hehehe

I'm lookin' @ those OD/Staples PM MAxtors right now! 40Gigers for 50 bux...NOT bad! 😀

Best thing you could do is to unlock your CPU ,set the lowest multipier to keep your CPU speed low(just for testing) & then up your FSB until you hit the limit. Then you'll know if its your CPU or not.
Btw I also have Crucial PC2100 CL2.5 ,I couldn't exceed 145MHz until I dropped the RAM timings from 2-2-2-5 to 2-2-2-6 ,now it runs at 153MHz🙂

It's very possible that you've reached your chip's limit. That's why they are OVER clocked. If every 1700+ could make it to 1633, you wouldn't have a 1700+. Sure, some of the 1700+ chips are re-binned 2000+ chips, but some are true 1700+ chips, and you might have gotten one of those, so 1595 maxes you out. That's not that bad of an OC either...you're 2 full speed grades up! I run mine at 1540, to be on the safe side, though it was fine at 1573 and booted fine at 1606, but then would lock after a few hours, no matter what voltage.

I don't ever understand people who get MAD when their chip won't overclock to a certain level. You paid for the stock speed...it doesn't need to run at anything other than the stock speed. Any extra you can get is a bonus. While I might be a little disappointed if I couldn't OC my chip at least a little, I certainly wouldn't be upset about it. I paid for 1.47GHz...the fact that I'm getting 1.54GHz is a nice plus. I might try to go to 1606 with a better HSF, but if it doesn't work, oh well.

At 1.85V the best I could get out of my 1700+ was 1.58Ghz, at 1.86V I could get 1.6Ghz. Assimilator1 has it right regarding the connection between FSB and multiplier, with my multiplier unlocked and at 1.85V the best setings I could get were 10x158, 11x144 and other settings always maxing at around 1580Mhz.

It is likely that the only way to get an improvement above 1580/1600 will be to raise your voltage even further. I got frustrated just like you, raised my voltage to 2.0V, happily ran prime95 stabily for 1 hour at 13x133, then the computer rebooted, gave me a blank screen, and I discovered I had fried my CPU. CPU temps never even went over 48C so I thought I was playing it safe, but I was wrong. So be careful not to push things overboard, if I were you then I would be satisfied with 1600Mhz unless you're willing to risk the possibility of losing your CPU like I did.

HEY! I really appreciate all of the help that youall have been! I REALLY DO!!!! WOW!

You guys have given me that last bit of info that I couldn't find on amdmb, hardocp, or overclockers forums. I searched and read, but to no avail! 😉 I REALLY appreciate your input Kuroyama, Jman13, and Assimilator1

I'll try those 2.5, 2-2-2-6 Assimilator1. I bet that's the ONLY combination I haven't tried this far 🙂

we'll see what the lastnight of trying this ol' 1700 out will bring 😉

I appreciate your words of warning Kuroyama!!! They WILL be heeded! NO MORE CRAZY OCin' for me! 😉 I think I'll just stay stock for now...I dont notice $150 worth of difference! No need to push it! 🙂

Jman13 I couldn't agree more. I'm very happy w/ the chip that I have. It certainly would have been nice to get an 2000+ "rebadged" or something. It's just nice to finally have something that smokes a P4 @ any given point! 🙂

Thanks AGAIN for the help peeps! 🙂

God Bless
