I can always tell when I'm in a place that has been recently occupied by a smoker because I want to puke my guts up.

I'm more curious as to why people _start_ smoking. I can understand why they'd continue, once started. It just seems an odd decision to make to me, given how unpleasant the first cigarette usually is. I mean its something you have to get used to, no?

And how many people start smoking as an adult, rather than starting before they are even legally supposed to? Over here it seems like a huge proportion of smokers started when they were legally under age. I wonder how common smoking would be if it were possible to totally prevent anyone under age from trying it?

I used to smoke occasionally in social situations (when out drinking). Since my GF quit smoking I have given it up entirely.

If underage people *could not* (that's a big hypothetical) smoke, then I would guess there would be very few people who pick up the habit. Most people start in high school because it's "cool."

It's something to look forward to during lunchtime. Also, it is the same reason people drink or smoke weed. I hate how everyone looks down on smoking but they have no problem drinking a beer or two.

FYI, drinking a beer or two does not stink the room up.

I agree with the overall sentiment but I don't think it's exactly comparable.

Going to a bar and drinking one or two beers is the alcohol equivalent of social smoking. It doesn't really hurt anyone and it doesn't intrude on my life.

Smoking constantly in public, filling my air with secondhand smoke, and making everything in an area smell terrible DOES intrude on my life. That's the smoking equivalent of getting blasted, throwing up everywhere, and acting like a dick.

I don't like it when people use drugs, legal or otherwise, in such a way that it intrudes on my life. The problem is that even light smoking is enough to stink everything up. I am glad for the smoking bans in my city. I was at a small town bar without a smoking ban a couple months ago and it was awful.

I smoke cigars here and there. I like the flavour and I find it relaxing; I generally only smoke them at home though because I look stupid with a cigar in my hand.

Right now I smoke about one cigarette a day, though I haven't had one in three or four days now since I ran out and packs are so damn expensive.

I do it primarily because it helps me lose weight. Nicotine is an appetite suppressant and the act of smoking gives me something oral to do since I'm eating much less.

Smoking can be extremely enjoyable, and I think that anyone that never has a cigarette in their life misses out on one of life's little pleasures. The nicotine makes me jittery, but combining a cigarette with a beer is awesome. Smoking helps your cognitive function (ever notice how many writers and creative types smoke?) so when you chill out in the evening with a smoke and a beer, you start thinking of things in ways you hadn't thought before, and you start getting ideas for things. (Unlike the ideas you get from alcohol alone, these are good ideas.)

Also, I'm not exactly a rebel or nonconformist anything, but I have to admit it feels good to enjoy an activity SO many people bitch about.

I'm not telling anyone that they need to start a habit, but if you are in your late 20s or older and have never had a smoke, I would absolutely recommend trying it.

Poll needs "because I'm on fire" option.

Seriously, last (only) time I smoked I was literally on fire, or at least my boot was. I'd tell the story except my kids would just start laughing at me again and it would hurt my man-pride.
