The real one. Yeah we have stuff like Fear Factor, but I pay no attention to it. To think that a video game is the only place to go to find intelligent people is just sad. 🙁

I like my real world friends, even if they do have a tan.

I don't play, but I can say that part of the attraction is because, deep down inside, most of us realize how insignificant we are in the "real world". And not just in a cosmic sense...even right down to our planet, country, state, even hometown, we don't matter that much. MMORPGs give you a chance to be a hero and "save the world". "You" are a strong, capable, powerful being with lots of friends. Obviously this is quite an attractive option to people.

You and I may pay no attention to it, but most people do - that crap tops the ratings. Likeminded people are too diluted in the real world; it's preferable to find a condensed source imo. I've been outside and braved the big yellow light-ball thingie (is it true you're not supposed to look directly at it?). I have friends with whom I communicate in voice rather than text 😉 But the OP asked why people play MMORPGs, and I answered.

Intelligent, non-adolescent people in MMORPGs? How do you figure?

If you played EQ on a Zek server, I think you'd revise that statement. Also you still have people shouting about religion and politics all the time. That's not to say that intelligent and non-adolescent people don't play MMORPG's, because I think there are some, but I wouldn't say the ratio is any higher than it is in the real world.

As a former addict, I'd have to say the social atmosphere keeps people playing. A sense of obligation to whatever team/guild/group-of-friends you've joined to provide your character's services to meat a group-oriented objective that's nothing more than a huge time sink. A sense of producing something, developing a character to become more and more powerful. Or some people just play to wreck the experience for others because they get enjoyment out of hate tells.

There are various things about the different games that appeal to so many different people. I'd have to say that MMORPGs are for the most part the most complicated/complex games I've ever played in my life. Intriguing, to say the least.

I'm out now! Freed of my addiction for almost 4 months now and never going back, although I don't regret getting into it.

I quit. MMORPG is no fun and gets difficult at high lvls if you solo. There goes $45 down the drain.

why do people play a massive MULTIPLAYER game solo? it always confused me.

Probly because 90% of the players are little jerk kids that shouldn't be on the internet let alone a adult game. 😀

Hmm I defend his previous statement and he come back with this.

Looks like one of the 90% right here. 😛

False sense of accomplishment.

I like the evolution. When the evolution stops, or become too much of a grind, I quit (I am a looser I know)

Same for me. I love the rpg leveling and the equipment. But the higher you get, the more fetch quests that take up an hour of your time, and the slower the leveling gets I just drop it.
That's why untiol now I never played mmo's but WoW promised to be different along with being set in a familiar universe. Honestly I'd probably still play if my roomate didn't give it up as a total grind.

It's like a chatroom with cool graphics, lots of collaboration, and you get to be competitive.

I've given them up though in interest of having a life.

Heheh, the Zeks were the filters 😉 Because of them, the PvE servers were able to enjoy a much more mature playerbase. This began to change as Sony made detrimental changes to the game and started screwing their customers more & more, inciting the older & wiser people to leave, but compared to the normal person, the average EQ player was still a step above.

How do you know which new MMORPG's to play? THere are so many out there... 🙁

Don't do it.... seriously... You're better off not starting. It will eat your time, and energy. Only when you quit do you realize that it wasnt even that fun, and you realize all the other things you were missing out on.

QFT, except the fun part. Sometimes they are not fun and just a drag, and other times they can be exhilarating...actually they USED to be exhilarating back with Ultima Online because they neutered the ability to PK, but now the PKing on most/all of these games is crap compared to UO, when anybody at any time could get nailed by an anti-social PKer. It was the best.

In any case, please listen to Doboji. It's a lesson that is learned hard if you need to learn it yourself.

It's true to a certain extent. But if you can play with your S.O. that changes things, wouldn't you agree?
