why do you play computer games (on your own)?

they are pointless, aren't they? just a waste of time. how can you get satisfaction from mastery of a computer game, over silicon and plastic which feels nothing? is it just a symptom of testosterone with nowhere to spend it? I think better of girls because they don't play computer games (normallly). the only games I liked were worryingly anal with a hint of grandiosity...

what a stupid question. lol.
first of all, have you ever played a Nintendo or Playstation or any other type of game?
and have you ever thought that maybe people play games because games are fun?

What kinda people have *you* been playing with??? 😛

entertainment, DUH.

"...step right up folks! Who's gonna pay me this time? I'm going through the game on the HardCore setting this time."

😕

see? it doesn't work.

Why watch TV then?
Why listen to the radio?
Why play video games?
Why have sex?

Cause they're all forms of entertainment.

excuse me fellas, there's no need to flame me. you ain't achieving nothing, nobody thinks you're clever for it.
what I was getting at was the competitive element of it. somehow it doesn't seem as satisfying to master a computer game compared to beating your fellows.

I adjusted the title slightly to reflect that.
no, I really am asking a serious question. computer games seem stupid and boring to me, but hypnotic. no good for the brain. I just can't get up excitement for them. so IF I read this long manual or IF I'm patient enough, I'll get better scores or make another level. oh wow.
can't anyone actually look into themselves and make any intelligent insight about what exactly a computer game is doing for them please?

And more than TVs, radios, and music, they are much more readily interactive. You control what happens.

I'm usually more into multiplayer games but i've played some very good rpg's by myself too, playing against the comptuer doesnt make it any less fun.

okay, so you changed the question... the answer is still that it is entertaining. games can help you deal with stress, or calm you down, or increase your accuracy. most of the games you would play on your own though are games that would challenge your intellect... games like UT and CS you usually play against your friends...

1) not all of us have a high bandwith connection to the internet to play multiplayer games
2) Some of us have this thing called work. We can't stay up till the wee hours of the morning hubbing with our buddies like we could when we were in college
3) for me at least, it is far more interactive than watching that mental devoid they call television
4) it is good stress relief

Many games that I play are non-fps strategy or are mission based. Strategies and missions built by humans.

Why do you read a book? To get to the ending. Why do I play a game? To get to the ending.

Why would you watch TV then? First of all most addictive TV shows are "no good for the brain", infact popular TV like "Friends", "Survivor", or even "Who wants to be a Millionaire" don't increase your IQ over time. Educational TV shows isn't really entertaining. Television isn't interactive or competitive like "computer games". The excitement is not the score or making another level, more as playing for fun and meeting new strangers through multiplayer.

well, sure, few programs are going to feed a genius. but the trouble with computer games is that no matter how long the manual is, I end up doing very repetitive and mindless things in the end. it's always the same.

<< they are pointless, aren't they? just a waste of time >>

Everything in life is assigned value by the individual. Some people decide gaming has mondo entertainment value. Thus they game. Other people have different amusements.

And btw, strictly speaking, everything we do can be called a "waste of time". It's all a matter of perspective.

Stress reliever definitely...especially Quake3. For some reason it's extremely satisfying when you hit someone with the railgun 😱
It's mostly for fun though.

<< wanna come on a date with me to see a porn movie? >>

There's something just not right about this sentence 😱

Never gotten excited? OK, go play System Shock 2 or Half-Life single player...bring a couple pairs of undies with you...you will need 'em. 🙂

Oh yeah...and play it at night, with the room dark and the door closed so there are no interruptions...and make sure the sound is fairly loud -- you have to be able to hear very clearly to get it all...
