Why do you only see Apples in movies?

all movies I watch you see the computer being used is an Apple Macintosh

what's so great about it? why don't they use PCs? as in, Lenovo, Sony, etc.

I bought an Apple Mac Book Pro last year and couldn't get used to it in 48 hours so I returned it.

I missed so many apps that I had on my PC and I didn't want to do research on each one to find an alternative.

What's so great about a Mac that I can't do on a PC?

Do they even have AdBlock Plus, LastPass, Xmarks ? I can't do without those extensions

I see them a lot around here at schools and a few other places.
I think maybe a lot of people want a good quality built machine and something they don't have to hassle with too much. Microsoft could learn a lot from them actually.
Also, there's probably a lot of people who like to use final cut for video editing.
 
Unless you are watching idiotic shows like O.C. and similar, I assume there are not alot of Mac computers in the TV general. I very much see just IBM compatible PCs, I even seen my laptop and old screen in several movies, but these computers don't often run windows or linux, rather some special GUI designed for the movie topic.

As far as I know, Mac OS is not completely useless but yes it lacks alot on stuff that windows has, while it is sold exclusively with apple computers it is more stable than windows in some cases but I otherwise don't see any special advantage the Mac OS has over Windows. Yet everyone knows everything apple is badly overpriced, and I so far always bought alternatives. The only thing that is apple and doesn't completely suck for that price is iPod, I wanted to buy one, but I didn't do as iTunes is just stupid program and you must have it in order to work with the player.

Well I can't remember the names off the top of my head now but me and my wife were just watching "This is 40" and they had Macs all over the place

you're right about hem being so over priced for crappy specs (in my opinion) I would pay $3000 USD for a MacBook Pro with a GeForce GT620 + 128 GB SSD and a 15.4 inch screen where as you see the laptop in my sig? that cost me half that amount exactly with specs that would blow any Mac out of the water.

The one thing I *think* maybe Mac excels in, is its registry. It almost never gets corrupted like with Windows when you uninstall programs. you simply drag/drog a program to the trash can and bam, it's gone. With Windows if you don't take care when uninstalling some programs like an antivirus or some crappy app, they may leave registry remnants all over the place which may cripple your PC. Yes you can do a registry clean but again if you are not careful, you could screw up your PC more than do it any good.

I see all the graphic designers at my work place ONLY use Mac. Why in the world? a PC can have a better graphics card and install Adobe Photoshop. I just don't get it


On a side note, what really pisses me off is of my mom or someone tells me "oh can you help me copy my MP3s from my PC to my Mac?" no matter how many times I've done it, i have to read an online tutorial everytime to be able to do it it's harder than installing Windows for god's sake!

Whatever happened to simply copy/paste your MP3s to your flash drive? LOL

iTunes also comes with the crappy Bonjour service that sends your usage data to Apple and if you don't disable that your PC becomes slow as a turtle which most people don't know
 
Yup, advertising.
Whenever you see a clearly identifiable product in a movie and its not integral to the plot, it's a paid product placement. Apple has used this as a very effective advertising method from the start. I notice more often I see other PC makes showing up.
 
I believe the short answer is that, while (last I recall) Apple doesn't pay for product placement, they are more than willing to give away their products for use in film and television.
 
One other possibility is that all creative people use Apple especially in the movie industry, so they get for their movies what they think is best.
 
They have been doing it for a while. Apple has less than 10% of the market for Computers and Lappytops but they are all over movies and TV.

It's probably the particular movie idd.

About the registry, the corrupt windows registry and its continuous cleaning requirements are myth. Once you uninstall some program, yes some registry assets will remain but they are not doing anything and have no impact on your system. Registry has no impact on the system performance as many are claiming it, especially because only keys that are read are the ones needed in particular moment. If you delete some program, there will be nothing linking to keys again and therefore they won't get read ever again. And for the fact registry assets are very very small, the unused keys are occupying probably just few bytes of your HDD storage, which is joke in terms of today's HDD capacities. That's how the reg cleaners work, they are just verifying if the keys are linked to real files in your system and if not, they are deleted, that's all, as there is no particular way to decide which keys you might need or not.

A lot of musicians seem to use macbooks, but from what I have seen most movie people seem to use pcs. They have to as the high end desktop macs are complete junk for high end work.
 
There was a story a while back about a company that got some Macs for advertising. They superficially outlined the process, but the story is no longer available because Apple got pissed and had them take it down.

However, what I remember was Apple has units for this purpose that they will provide at no cost, but it seems they want them back, at least from some advertisers.

Also, a lot of TV shows block out the logo, so presumably these ones are not getting paid to use these products. eg. If you watch Veronic Mars, there are always strategically placed desk objects or post-it notes, etc, so you never see the Apple logo. Or sometimes they put on fake custom covers to hide the back completely.

I wonder also if some shows which do block out the logo use Macs just because they have them on hand. For example, I rented out my house for a TV shoot and the crew had a ton of Apple products. None of the shots needed a computer in them, but they did shoot a lot stuff using my existing electronics and appliances. They just put black tape over all the logos, which was fine for the shots since most of these were black anyway. eg. My LG TV with strategically placed black electrical tape just looks like a TV with no logo. I was pulling tape off stuff in my house for months afterwards. That said, they did move my iPad out of one shot, because they said it was too recognizable, even with the logo hidden.

BTW, I've seen Dell and Alienware product placements not infrequently too, but Apple seems the most common. Sony VAIO is very common in Sony movies though of course. Wikus van de Merwe has a VAIO in District 9.

For phones, besides the tons of iPhone placements, I've seen a fair amount of Windows Phone and Blackberry placements too. I don't recall having seen an Android device placement yet. Before the touchscreen smartphone era, Nokias were very common as well. Anyone remember the nasty "Japanese" Nokia phone in Transformers?

registry corruption is very real. There are many apps that will alter any number of OS related keys and will not change them back when uninstalled, this alone can cause problems. Your asking a source (not the uninstalled source) to read a key for a function that does not exist cause you uninstalled it. There are thousands of forum posts related to the need to fix registry keys as they produce all sorts of errors or prevent booting up.
Not very many registry cleaner will restore any particular keys to their default values anyways or prevent one source from reading to the wrong key. If you work on PC's much, it is very real.
You will also find those that use only portable apps do not suffer from such issues. The issue is dependant on many factors, not just the fact you installed some poorly coded app, but a compounded issue over time. I could give some examples but the point is the registry has a down side.

It sure does. I haven't been in a single production studio or TV station that doesn't use Macs for most of the creative work. There's two in our studio. One records video, the other encodes it and uploads it to our cloud server.

Apple computers have been in movies and TV shows for a long time. There was the classic Macintosh 128k in the antique shop in BTTF 2. Seinfeld had a 20th Anniversary Macintosh.

Alienware got plugged a lot in Big Bang Theory. As if real geeks would have Alienware laptops. 😀
 
Actually Macs are great. Maybe they aren't good for the OP since his interests likely lie elsewhere that Macs aren't good for but they are seriously great machines.
I actually don't like most things from Apple (I use Linux at home and at work) but I decided to get a macbook air since it was light enough that I could carry everyday easily so that I could get some work done on the train during my work commute. I was sold on the Air right away once I used it. It truly is a spectacular machine. I use it for programming and have every single thing on it that I'd use on a development machine and it works great. It boots up from sleep in literally seconds. There isn't any parasitic drain and the battery lasts for hours.
Anyway it's probably one of the best purchases I've made.
 
The Airs have somewhat mediocre screens IMHO. I much, much prefer the Pros, but yeah, they cost a lot.
 
Movies and special effects are done by artists that learned on Macs. Macs have always been extremely common in the film industry.
 
I think the Macs just stand out more. Since Windows 8 and Windows 7 phone, Microsoft has been whoring out on shows. Just watch Hawaii-Five-O and wait for the Windows aside in almost every episode.

Sony is big in newer movies, not sure about the past few years though since I don't go anymore.

I'm all for less conspicuous product placement, but if anyone's watched Bones in recent years, holy shit do they go overboard on plugging Toyotas. Actual marketing lines are put into the dialogue.
