Why do you like P&N?

The point of this thread is the following:
1) State how you found P&N
2) State what you like about P&N
3) State what brings you back
4) State what you'd like to see for improvements and changes

For me, I came to P&N to read about the american political mindset as it seemed so much different than the canadian. Most canadians you see believe in key principles and are very trusting of the government institution. Americans on the other hand have a broad range of political views making them far more interesting to read and consider. I really like how most of the people here, even those who are off the deep end, generally have an excellent understanding of issues facing our world on a day to day basis. I come back for the quality of the membership, quality discussion and broad viewpoints. If I had to change one thing, it would be less banning and more vacations. In the heat of discussion, people go off the deep end, and shouldn't be taken away from the positive environment P&N has.

I didn't find P&N, P&N found me. Was heavily involved in the OT threads leading up to the Iraq war when those threads were moved to the new forum P&N.

You post way too much 😉

1 - AnAndTech.com was a computer website that did reviews on computer products, they had a forum and a good community. Off-topic is hiliarous and is just as good as fark. I was here before the P&N forum was started. I came to the forum with very right wing views and was basically at the same level as the trolls. Things have changed for the good 🙂

2 - Stunt, Vic, 3chordcharlie, Rainsford, TotalCommand.... Basically, people that can keep a good discussion going and use something called "logic" in their agruments. 🙂

3 - See above.

4 - I'd like to have the following members assassinatied... I mean imprisoned.... Err.. I mean banned.... Err... Right now I don't have any serious issuses with the forum, whoever the mods are, they do a good job for what the forum is.

College for me will be starting for me Tuesday, so I won't be seeing you guys as much. I'll get to discuss issuses like this with people in person. :Q

1. Found it linked on a hunting forum I used to frequent.
2. Well informed posters on both sides, love a good fight.
3. To see who gets banned next.
4. Limit to the amount of OPs one person can start in a single day 😉

Well, I came across Anandtech while searching for a what would be a quality laptop to suit my needs. I've liked his reviews and the people in the laptop forum seemed to know what they were talking about and replied fairly quickly to my posts (a bonus). When I say the P&N forum I stopped by and was hooked. I'm a sucker for news and politics (not to mention getting to discuss and argue over news and politics) and P&N offers more than I could ask from my daily newspaper. On topics that I feel I can contribute I post, but most of the time I like to read up on things I just don't know enough about. I find the human element also a big draw, although frustrating sometimes when people get into pointless banter and I'm trying to read up on a topic before posting.

BTW, best of luck with your new environment Tab. I hope you find your time in college to be fun, enlightening, and rewarding.

Topic Title: Why do you like P&N?
Topic Summary: After countless discussions of the same issues, what keeps you coming back?

Sadly with the U.S. Government out of control of the people this is like the underground railroad.

That was a success, the jury is still out on whether the U.S. survives.

Some of the threads are worthless, hacks on each side sprouting the talking points of the day. But some of the threads are very worth while, with opions and reasons and thought. I've been a lurker here for a while, I kinda belong in the programming and games forum. I'm not a polatcal hack for either party nor for a third party wannabe. I'm a citazen that wants a better demoracaty. I've had some limited sucess asking the assembled quarem for there opinion. And I'm guilty of snipeing an occqasional comment in other threads. Please forgive the aweful spelling, its just me.

1) PN was created after I joined.
2) Occasionally I feel the need to vent my frustration against the people who actually hate the world, but hide their hate behind a false guise of love.
3) To me, forum addiction is like heroin.
4) I would like to see more intelligent discussions, and a curtailing of the trolling and flamebaiting. Naturally discussions will get heated and flames will fly in the heat of battle (and that's great), but other political forums have strict rules about threads posted specifically to incite, especially those with purposefully misleading thread titles. I understand that PN is AT's garbage can, but even those need to be cleaned from time to time...

1) I came to Anandtech for hardware reviews, checked out the hardware/software sections for help. I was bored one day and noticed the P&N section.

2) Uh... political debate.

3) I keep coming back because it's somewhat better than staring at a wall all day, the alternative.

4) Improvements? Nothing is wrong with the forum. The intelligent posters, lame know-nothings, and trolls are all a vital part of the experience. However, the political atmosphere in the US is somewhat stagnant at the moment (between elections and terrorist attacks), and P&N more or less reflects that.

When I first came here (not that long ago) I was enthusiastic about posting, and really got into all the various debates. Now most of the stuff is rehashed, and I simply can't muster the zeal I once had for online political debate. Any posts I make are forced and half-hearted... maybe things will pick up in 2006, but that's a ways away. It's hard, because now CAD and Rip are gone. CAD was good because he was a right-wing voice who would take part in discussions and not run out like so many other trolls. Rip was good because he made inflammatory threads that often created quite heated discussion.

Nowadays P&N induces little more than yawns from me, but I just don't have anything better to do. Oh well.

I like P&N because it has a smorgasbord of your typical liberals, conservatives, occasional minarchist and authoritarians in general. As an anarchist libertarian/anarcho-capitalist I came to crash the party.

I planned on doing the same at me olde university in the philosophy department. Too bad political philosophy was full, had to go with existentialism. 🙁 Oh well, I'll take it Winter quarter.

It's a long time since I participated in any discussions, since most is bashing of some politician/law/etc. unknown outside US.

1) State how you found P&N
- we were tossed out of off topic, I'm very glad that happened

2) State what you like about P&N
- so much information gets passed through here, alot of different ideas, the rare hope for actual discussions

3) State what brings you back
- all above

4) State what you'd like to see for improvements and changes
- more week bans for trolling and flaming, fewer perm bans, more discussions, more mega threads like the torture thread, its just great for references and historical purposes.

1) I was involved in heated discussions about same-sex marriage and helmet/seatbelt laws in OT, then those threads were moved here to P&N. I got completely lost and have been wandering around here ever since.

2) I enjoy listening to the occasional intelligent discussion from the more mature, intelligent posters in here.

3) Being employeed actually prevents me from interacting with jobless deadbeats who condone mostly socialistic practices, so this place enables me to laugh at them to a certain extent.

4) Public Moderators, instead of private. Consistent rule sets. Less permabans, but more frequent "vacations."

Followed the mainstream of the topic when it was liberated from the mindless masses it was born with from back in OT.

Life was so much simpler back then.

It tends to be populated by a more mature collection of personalities than those who frequent OT.

It's too often that threads get hijacked, spun off into another direction, or elevated into a private two or three person ego war . . . you loose the discussion.

. . . but when those in the discussion rise to the intelectual level that they can objectively carry on a meaningful exchange of ideas . . .
. . it can be spectacular . . . rare, but occasional.

Some participants have the nack to interject little puns and off the wall references, that;s always amusing to catch the humor.

The worst offense is that of trying to classify someone as 'Neocon' or 'Lib' - it's pointless to pigeon hole someone to box in a steroetypical alledged type person.
It's doesn't matter - they think that way because thats the way they are, and you ain't gonna change it.

But, hey, what's the choice, go back to OT ?

hey, have fun at college!

but don't forget your pals here at P&N, don't forget to drop by 🙂

1) State how you found P&N

There was a link to it on the left-hand-side of the page

2) State what you like about P&N

Political discussion, and I feel smarter after reading posts from some members, like dave

3) State what brings you back

Habit, the same reason I buy cigarettes, it's addictive. But it beats watching tv.

4) State what you'd like to see for improvements and changes

The ability to eSlap certain members.

1) I've been posting here for a while now, was involved in some of the discussions about 9/11, and followed the discussion into P&N.

2) Discussing issues with the smarter people, and sometimes just getting into pointless arguments with the less smart people 😉

3) Political discussion with people who disagree with me. Discussing politics with friends or coworkers is fine when everyone agrees, but since that doesn't usually happen, I try to keep real world political discussions to a minimum. Plus, internet message boards in general are amusing, all the more so with a topic people feel so strongly about. Sort of like the Intel vs AMD threads from back in the day, only more so.

4) Fewer permabans, but more enforcement of the rules. People sometimes act like total asshats on here, and it's not just name calling. That sort of thing is fine every once in a while (hey, who doesn't like a good rant or flame-fest?), but sometimes it really detracts from the thread.
