wuts the big deal with them?

how would you acutally use them besides maybe just getting into trouble with them

Well if I could ever find my swiss army knife I would use it all the time, very useful in daily life.
Opening packages, cutting wire, etc.

Knives are primal, probably among the very first tools. Fun to look at, increases pocket bulge and useful. When a steak house gives me a tough cut or dull tool, its a pleasure
to pull out a sharp one of my own. Not that I would ever use it, but as a weapon its very personal because of the close contact required to be used as such....🙂

You actually pull out a pocket knife in a resteraunt to cut your steak? 😕

Knife stuff is fascinating. The metallurgy, history, makers, designs. etc. Gerber, it isn't just a babyfood company.
Forschner, Victorinox, Case, Buck, Boker, Parker, Camillus. Stainless, Carbon Steel, Ceramique, Parkerized, it is an endless course of study.

I find it amusing that so many do not know how to actually sharpen a knife.

I have a well used Case MoonStone.

I love knives and have ever since I was a kid. It's a gadget thing... like watches, guns, computers, etc. Plus, knives are a very useful tool.

I find any guy who dislikes knives to be highly suspect. 😉

I need a knife because I want the opprotunity to use the following lines if I'm ever at a camp out and there's a marshmellow roast:

"I am sympathetic to your aim. I can tell you with no ego, this is my finest marshmellow stick. If on your journey you should encounter God, God will be poked. Yellow-haired camper, go. Roast some marshmellows."

Then, I can with great ceramony hand the marshmellow stick to someone who is at the roast so that they might roast some marshmellows for themselves since I don't like marshmellows. However, I can't very well carve the marshmellow stick without a knife, can I?

It's the next best thing when I'm not carrying my gun...

Because they're close-range weapons that can be used for attack and defense with a huge number of different styles and techniques such that you can capture all the action and the byplay of both (or more) parties in one shot. Some of that's true with hand-to-hand combat as well, but knives and related weapons create additional options and let you really "cut loose" against your opponent because you're usually going to be striking weapons-to-weapons instead of body-part-to-body-part.

In contrast, gunplay is much less interesting; combatant #1 fires, then you cut to a shot of combatant #2 either getting hit or not.

Um, i use mine all the time. Have you ever tried opening a retail pack CPU? Or hell, most things these days come in those type of hard plastic packages. Or opening/cutting boxes, cutting plastic wraps off skits, plastic ties, hell, a million reasons.

i thought they would be useful... and it seems like a good guy gadget... bought one... returned it

all it did was take up space in my pocket. box/package/miscellaneous cutting ability does come in handy but i already have a very sharp blade in my leatherman multi-tool

actually, if anything, i would recommend getting a multi-tool... i found all the screwdriver and scissor and stuff just as handy !

They are nice to have around when you need to cut things. Like boxes, threads on clothing, snitches...
