I choose my computers based on what offers the best performance\price ratio. Based on that criteria Apple does not fair too well.

You people and your "there's no software!"

UGH

There is just as much software for the mac as there is for the PC. In many cases, it's also better software. Most programs that are written for PC also have a mac version. If there isnt then someone will write a functional duplicate of it. Happens all the time. The thing is that a lot of the time the mac version is shareware, so it only costs like $10 instead of $50.

i dont think it matters with 4% of the market

True, but if you consider just how really big that 4% is (considering worldwide markets), you'd be surprised how much money it adds up to.
3-4% isn't a monopoly no matter who you ask.

To compare Apple to MS in market power is completely absurd.

I dont' have a choice, I have to use macs.

that said, I love some of the forward thinking development and integration (like osx) they provide. I love how quick they are to pick up trends and make products materialize (like keynote, imovie, or the new noise free g5). but I hate how buggy their software is (because of a small user base I imagine). I also hate that the software they make is all geared towards casual users and doesn't stand up to commerical use (like iphoto, imovie, idvd, and even jaguar).

the end.

i simply cannot justify or afford spending the money on an adequate mac.they need wake up and stop pricing their products with a 1995 era mentality.

the only reason i would never be a regular Mac customer is probably price.

I think post OS X macs are very nice machines. However, I'd never buy one at the moment because of how expensive they are. Ah well. I know if I ever got one, the first thing I'd do is ditch the mouse and put a mx500 on it or somthing :)

As a CS major, I would actually love an apple lappy, not because they do anything better for me then a windows machine, but because they usually look much better.

However, this isn't enough for me to drop a literal 2-3x the cost on one for the same configuration as a windows lappy, so I stick with my HP for now.

I don't dislike Apple, but my wallet does :p

Seriously, if I could get an Apple for a price similar to an equally-equipped PC, I would have no problem buying one.

Pretty much my exact feelings on the subject... why get a mac when you can get a pc that will do more cheaper?

Buggy software? Doesn't stand up to commercial use? Are we using the same Macs here? Their server stuff is incredible, Mac OS X Server is rock-solid, and the client version of Mac OS X inherits that nicely.

I've grown to like Apple more and more over the past couple years. I'd say they really caught my attention when the first Ti book came out, ever since I've watched them closely and I'm getting pretty close to buying one. I look forward to it. OS X is fantastic, and a huge leap over their old OS9 stuff.

The G5 looks to be very promising. They finally have some hardware that can go head to head with Intel I believe...

I'd love to have a G5 and one of those beautiful displays, but I can't justify the cost right now. So I think I'll get a 12" Powerbook come next update. It will go nicely with my Ipod which I cherish, it's a great piece of hardware.

I think their software is pretty slick, but the lack of game support blows.

Typing this on an Apple I can say I love the hardware. The design is nice and sleek. As for software, I'm running Linux on it so I got anything (well, other than x86-only apps) available for Linux. Its quite speedy for a 600mhz processor, too.

a) Maya doesn't run very smoothly on a mac. It's hard to keep Maya's windows mimized in a comfortable manner on the mac, and the processing power on it doesn't compare to Maya on a PC.

b) I had a job using a mac, and I spent more time working out problems that would have never occured on a PC. Additionally, I was working with students that knew nothing about the mac and all they wanted to do was to rub touch the thing because "it's so pretty". Because of their overly astetic(sp) design, my work was delayed, interrupted and overall difficult just because I had to use a mac instead of a PC.

c) PCs control the majority of the market, and swapping files between mac and PC is not an easy task (as I found out with the afformentioned) So creating something on the mac meant that I had to do extra work to make it usable on the PC. The OSX support for accessing network drives is apparently hideous. The only way to transfer data between the mac and the PC is to burn a disc everytime you need a file or hook up an incredibly slow USB floppy drive, which is a bad idea because there is a 99% chance the mac is going to not recognize the disk and have trouble accessing it, then it will fill it with files that the PC doesn't need... so essentially, the mac makes less use of the space on a floppy (which we all know isn't much to begin with). When the people you work for can't grasp the concept of a CD-RW, you have to burn a fresh disk everytime which is very annoying, especially when it's only for a few megs of files.

d) Because the market is controlled by PCs, the masses of software and equipment is designed for them. While Apple does a good job of equiping new macs with the latest features, upgrading the old macs isn't so easy, and with a hefty price tag on them, it's not affordable to upgrade every year, or even every other year. A mac costs more than the average college student's car.

e) Many programs have gone out of their way to make the GUIs look like the mac OS, which in my opinion, is way to cutesy for the poor functionality it gives you.

f) Macs come in one look, and one look only, and I personally think that look is boring and ugly. If something is going to be sitting on my desk where I can see it all day, then I want it to look good.

g) There is a popular misconception that macs don't crash as often as PCs... or that they don't crash at all. This is complete bull, you can set your watch to a mac crashing. Then there's the thing with the busy icon... and it hanging... and hanging... and hanging...
The busy icon will display, not allow you to click on ANYTHING, and keep going and going when you try to do things that shoulnd't make it do that. Such as eject a disc, move a file, or close a program.

h) Software side eject buttons only? Have fun with that one. Bring some needle nose pliers and a screw driver along, cause you'll be pulling those disks out at least once a week.

i) The average webpage displays improperly on the mac version of IE. Tables are frequently disfigured, CSS does not work as well and is limited, and there always seems to be an issue with image placement being out of wack.

I'm tired of complaining. :-\
I'm not just another mac basher without reason. When I first used OSX I loved it. Now I hate it like I hate spam.

Too expensive. That's it. Everything else about them is wonderful, they're just too expensive.
