When I first got my Trinitron I noticed them. Really bugged me. It's been many months since I even realized they were there.

And then you had to put up this stoopid topic, dammit!

I'm as anal as they come and have had the lines for years. The trade off, (without the lines) is to get a cheaper monitor. You can only see them with a white background. I enjoy a lot of games, so it's no concern. You decide.

Those two lines are noticeable if you're sitting really close the screen and the image is bright. (word document, white background, etc.) Other than that, the lines aren't that big of a deal. And when you're on a flat panel, you'll just be in awe of how nice the image is! :D

Oh, what does everyone think of those expensive hard drive duplication machines? the ones that cost like $1000 and duplicate multiple hard drives . . .

Just don't pay attention to them and don't think about them. Focus on the content displayed on the screen. IF you start thining about them, you are gonna get paranoid and start seeing them everytime, lol.

It's kind of like how people are annoyed at the group marking in some bootlegged movies (e.g. the "Z" in the bootlegged Matrix, which appears in the corner of the screen most of the time). They, for some reason, can't enjoy the movie because they're eyes are fixated on the symbol (most susceptible people to advertisements?).

btw, I've had Trinitron monitors since 1994 and the line(s) don't bother me (1 on my 15", 2 on my 19").

The lines on my old Dell 17" Trinitron were noticeable, although it didn't bother me at all. My 19" Mitsubishi 900U Diamondtron's are so faint, you really have to try and find them. Barely there at all (are they there)?) I would never get anything other than an AG tube. They are brighter, have better color saturation and are sharper than shadow mask tubes. The two almost non existent lines are not anything to worry about.

If you have an Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, the Trinitron monitors are not for you! Otherwise, there has not been a better monitor made to date. ;)

I've had a Mitsubishi Diamondtron for over two years, and the only time I ever remotely notice the lines is when someone brings it up in a thread.

The flat screen, sharp pixels, and great color more than make up for the insignificant lines.

I don't see the point in complaining when there isn't any superior tech out there. If some company already made trinitron quality tubes without lines, then you would have a point. For now, i'll have to do with the two lines for better brightness and picture quality.

and no i don't really notice them. I've owned 3 trinitrons and one non-trinitron so far.

I have a bit of the obsessive-compulsive disorder, but it's for things like turning on a switch a few times to make sure "it's on good", or something... Yah, I call myself an idiot after I do things like that, but I still do them. Good thing my personality quirk doesn't cause me to care about the lines though :Q

I agree with the majority of the posts here. The lines don't bother me at all. I don't even see them unless I consciously look for them. I have a Viewsonic PF790 and a Gateway VX700 (Mitsubishi Diamondtron) and I never notice them unless something reminds me to look for them. That's all I use. The systems I use most at work are also AG-based.

If you do any kinds of work on a computer and you worked with a shadow mask CRT then at the end of the day you would come home and your eyes would be red. After switching to a Trinitron tube I felt much much better at the end of the day. Lines? I never ever see them, I'm too busy looking at the text and all those dollar signs on the screen.

I can't see them now unless I stare at one spot on my monitor anyways, and why would I ever do that?

All the computers here in the study center have trintrons monitors except for the 3 at the help desk, we have lcd screens, and every time I go out there to help somebody in word I keep thinking those lines are the page breaks :). Drives me nuts.

I don't know how many threads are posted here about monitors, but its about a factor of 10 too many. Buying a monitor is fairly simple:

1. You read the reviews
2. You narrow down your price-range/features expected
3. You wander down to a local computer store that sells tons of monitors and peep around
4. Decide what you like best. (I absolutely cannot stand the lines. So sue me. As said further up the screen SM tubes keep getting better so I keep buying them--my case exactly--that and the fact that short depth doesnt come in flat screen anyhow.)
5. Go home with your new-found preferences, and check REAL prices from online retailers like Onvia and Oupost that wont charge you shipping on that monster you are dying to order.
6. Decide on the best price-performance solution for your PERSONAL needs.
7. Order
8. Enjoy

No one can tell you what you like. Granted, you can train yourself to "not see" or more realistically ignore the lines, but that wasnt why this thread was started. It was started based on asking why we ALLOW this to happen. Economically, he is correct. If for 6 months, everyone either waited, or bought the improving SM monitors, the forces that drive the market would drive sony and mitsubishi to come up with another, better method. If they sell monitors by the millions, what spurs new advances? Flaming Pauli for his analysis is sub-approiate.

Its a matter of preference. Some people, like me, forget the lines very quickly. Others still see them after a long use. I dont blame you for that, I know everyone's got a different pair of eyes and a different brain. I always take consideration about the lines when I make a monitor recommendation. I know there are people here that just flat out hates AG tubes, and I also know that some people here tend to fall in love with them and will never go back to Shadow Mask.

troubleshooter:

If the process of buying monitors are this easy, then we will never need to ask questions about them.

<<1. You read the reviews>>

To lead it off, the web lacks monitor reviews. Plus the fact that reviews usually reflects little about this monitor other than pure specs because you still dont get to see it and all you read is the reviewer's opinion. Again, you may not like what he likes.

<<2. You narrow down your price-range/features expected>>

Ok that is pretty easy. But its one of things people cant seem to do it themselves, they ask questions about whether its worth it to pay more for a better model, whether they should get this because of a certain features blah blah... its sounds easy but its actually not.

<<3. You wander down to a local computer store that sells tons of monitors and peep around>>

Local computer stores usually dont carry all the models you want to see, sometimes it can be mighty hard to locate a store that has that monitor you have in mind. And that is trouble.

<<4. Decide what you like best. (I absolutely cannot stand the lines. So sue me. As said further up the screen SM tubes keep getting better so I keep buying them--my case exactly--that and the fact that short depth doesnt come in flat screen anyhow.)>>

Im not gonna bother sueing you for such frivolous matter, you like what you like, I like what I like, and we can stick to that. Again, if you cant see the monitors in real life, it can be hard to decide what looks good and what looks bad.

<<5. Go home with your new-found preferences, and check REAL prices from online retailers like Onvia and Oupost that wont charge you shipping on that monster you are dying to order.>>

That is if you can get through all the obstacles I described above.

<<6. Decide on the best price-performance solution for your PERSONAL needs.>>

Isnt that the same as #2?

<<7. Order>>

Thats easy.

<<8. Enjoy>>

That'll depend on if you got a good monitor or not. Sometimes you get a lemon, sometimes you're unlucky and it gets damaged during shipment, most of the time you'll get a good one though.

Ive had my Sony E200 for nearly a year and a half. Havent noticed the lines in a year 5 months and 29 days :) Really after 2 or 3 days you never notice. And its really only noticable on white background.

Am I the only one that prefers a good shadow mask over a good aperture grill? I'm not even talking about the lines.
