why do we pay so much in taxes?

federal income tax (~28%)
state income tax (~6%)
local income tax (when I lived in nyc)
sales tax (6% - 8.875%)
property tax (1.8% property value)
gas tax (25 - 30 cents per gal)

i definitely don't get back what i pay into taxes. single, no kids (no school).
that brings up another point. why do people with kids get tax breaks when they're the ones that will use more in social and public services?
 
The left believes taxation should be based on people's ability to pay. Since children cost money, they have less ability to pay and therefore pay less taxes. IMO the ability to pay concept is pretty weak intellectually because when you take it to its logical conclusion you get communism.

It's amazing how limited our generation's deductive capability has become.

Marriages save money, couples have greater ability to pay, yet they pay less taxes.

Taxation, like all things in life, must be based solely on one criteria. 😱 As simple as your mind must be, our world is not quite that. :'(
 
Capitalism functions best with growing economies. In order to grow an economy, you need more people. Therefore, most western democracies with capitalist economies encourage kids. In Europe, they don't even bother with tax credits anymore. They pay people here to have kids because the population of most western European nations is in decline.

Which is funny, because we tax productivity (ie, growing economy). We can't make up our mind if we like capitalism or we hate it.
 
Main reasons (in no order):
* To pacify the enemies of the state (Defense, FBI, ATF, etc.)
* To support state mandated morality (enforcement of social legislation, social welfare (foreign aid, welfare, Medicaid, etc.))
* To provide services that the general population is too unwilling or unable (in the case of health insurance for elderly) to prepare for themselves longterm (Social Security, Medicare)
* To line the pockets of our politicians' home states (pork barrel spending)

Obviously in your case someone made a mistake and should have drowned you as a baby and saved everyone a lot of time and money. But since you are here already you can start paying society back what you owe them asshole. When we have too many kids then I suppose we'll either force people to have less or make it more expensive. In the meantime, get back to work and keep paying those taxes. If you don't like it, go find a cave to live in.

Except they don't pay less taxes across the board. Generally if both of them are working they will pay the same or more than if they had been two single people. Its possible to pay less but unlikely if they are both working.

Taxes are a much higher % of GDP in most other first world nations, although they're generally collected more from the people at the top than from the middle class.

It's called Reaganomics- you bought it, you pay for it.
 
Our current system rewards poor decisions and punishes good. If you are successful, you are put in debt to those who are not.

A man who abstains from bringing a child into the world due to his financial ability to support it is forced to provide for the man who does not abstain, under the same circumstances.

As long as we continue to function this way, we are subsidizing failure and restraining progress. Need has become the basis for debt.

Being successful is not getting paid 300 times your average worker. Growing Economies does happen when all profit is given away as a bonus when none was deserved. These things don't happen in Germany and that country is extremely successful right now.

California keeps cutting and I haven't see a difference which pushes me further into the column of it simply being a method to redistribute wealth.
